The St. Mary's football team had a very special season this year. We finished a perfect 13-0 and won the D-2 State Championship on Nov. 21 in Lincoln at Memorial Stadium.
The team had a lot of pressure with all the high expectations for the year, but they never seemed to let the pressure bother them and had a lot of fun playing ball.
As a team, the boys did some very impressive things. In 13 games, they shut out six opponents and only gave up five points per game for the year. That is pretty impressive in eight-man football.
The boys also gave up less than 120 yards of total offense per game. We never trailed at any time during the thirteen games.
We also had some individual honors: Mike Simons received offensive player of the year honors in the Lincoln Journal Star (QB), Omaha World Herald (QB), and Huskerland (QB). He was also named to the All-Area team (QB&DB) and 1st team All-District (QB).
Kiel Neumann was defensive captain in the Lincoln Journal Star (LB) and 1st team All-Area (LB&OL), All-District (LB&OL), World Herald (OL), and Huskerland (LB).
Adam Koenig was defensive captain in the World Herald (DL) and first team All-District (DL) & (OL), Huskerland (DL), and Lincoln Journal Star (DL).
Dan Haggerty was first team World Herald, Lincoln Journal Star, Huskerland, and All-District (WR).
Ryan Hickey was first team All-District (RB) & (DL) and first team Huskerland (Athlete). Ryan was also our first 1000-yard rusher since we became eight-man, with 1054 yards.
Jed Givens (RB), Matt Willis (CB), and Curt Mahony (K) were all first team All-District.
