Good afternoon.  I am Kathryn Fuchser.  And I am Matt Schaaf.  Today we bring you the weekly school news from St. Marys High School.  Today marks the end of the third quarter.  Parent/Teacher Conferences for the third quarter reports are scheduled for Thursday, March twentieth.  The fourth and last quarter of school for the 2002-2003 school year starts at eight o’clock on Monday morning, March tenth.

            In this week’s news the all-school Mass was held this morning.  The eighth grade planned the Mass,  and the high school choir sang.  Today is Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of the season of Lent..

            This afternoon at the end of the school day also marks the beginning spring break this week.  There will be no school this Thursday and Friday, March sixth and seventh, for grades K-12.

            The Marian Yearbook staff is issuing a last chance call for taking orders for a personalized 2003 yearbook.  The list gets sent to the company on Monday.  No exceptions.  So see Mrs. Troshynski right away and bring your check for $36.00 for a personalized yearbook if you haven’t already purchased one.

            Now we turn  to news in the speech department . . . On Friday, February 28th, the Cardinal speech team traveled to Creighton.  Congratulations to out to several of the competitors.  Kylie Ludemann placed sixth in humorous prose.  Emily Dugan and Kathryn Fuchser placed third in duet acting.  The oral interpretation of drama team of Jordon Anderson, Megan Davis, Emily Dugan, and Kathryn Fuchser placed third.

            Then on Monday, March second, the speech team traveled to Ewing for the Niobrara Valley Conference speech meet.  Congrats to the Cardinal team!  Sarah Novak placed third in serious prose.  Serenity Butterfield placed fourth in humorous prose.  Kylie Ludemann placed sixth in humorous prose.  Emily Dugan and Kathryn Fuchser placed third in duet acting.  The OID team of Jordon Anderson, Emily Dugan, Kathryn Fuchser, and Gina Hoesing placed fifth.  A special congratulations goes out to the whole speech team for placing third as a team.  Next Monday, March tenth, the speech team travels to Butte to compete in the District speech meet.

            In sports news the Niobrara Valley Conference selected the all-conference teams for  girls basketball.  Senior Christine Troshynski was named to the first-team for all-conference, and Lindsey Kallhoff, Kara Garman, and Laura Cameron received honorable mention for the 2002-2003 Niobrara Valley All-conference girls basketball season.

            Last Thursday ended the season for the St. Mary’s  boys basketball season. The Cardinals ended the season with a 14-8 record and a second round sub-district loss to the Lynch Eagles with the score of 72-63. Congratulations goes out to the boys on their hard work and determination and a successful season.

            Monday begins the spring sports season practices.   High school track will start on Monday as well as boys’ golf.   Also St. Mary’s students will be looking forward to the annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration which is just a little over a week away.
