Good afternoon and welcome to our weekly broadcast of St. Mary's school news. I am Gina Hoesing. And I am Laura Cameron.

Although there will be no school this Friday, February fourteenth, due to a teacher in-service, the students will still be very busy with activities and sports. But I'm sure they will be happy to get that extra day to catch up on some much-needed sleep.

In other news, an all-school Mass will be held on Thursday, February 13, at 8:10 a.m. The seventh grade is planning this Mass.

The Student Council will be hosting the Sweetheart Dance this Saturday, February fifteenth. The dance will last from nine o'clock p.m. to twelve o'clock a.m., with coronation taking place at nine o'clock.

Students interested in traveling to Europe in May, 2004 and their parents are invited to attend a meeting tonight at the O'Neill High School library at 6:30 tonight.

And SMH students are reminded to pick up the winter sports pictures that they orodered. The pictures can be picked up in the office.

Also this in the final week for ordering the 2003 Marian Yearbook. The Journalism II Staff members will take any orders. Cost is $32.00 or $36.00 for a personalized book.

Now let's take a look at this week's senior profile. The profile this week is on Christopher Havranek. He is the son of Dennis and Mary Ann Havranek of O'Neill. He is seventeen years old and has attended St. Mary's for twelve years. This year Chris is involved in the musical. In his spare time, he likes to drive around. After graduation Chris plans to attend Central Community College in Grand Island and major in radio broadcasting.

Let's see what's going on in sports. The athletes at St. Mary's have had a very busy week. In junior high basketball, the junior high boys' basketball teams traveled to Spencer last Friday, February seventh. The B team won and the A team lost.

In junior varsity sports, the junior varsity girls' basketball team was defeated in a close game by the Butte Lady Wildcats last night . The score was 25-27. On Friday, February 14, the junior varsity girls will finish their season. They will face the Chambers Lady Coyotes at four p.m. at Chambers.

Now let's move on to varsity sports. The varsity wrestlers are finishing out their season. They competed at the Rangeland Conference Meet on February sixth. Tyler Cole finished second and Tim Krugman was named the Rangeland Conference Champion in the 215-pound weight class. Tim Krugman also competed at the Grand Island Invitational on February eighth and earned third place. The next wrestling meet is the District meet in Aurora this Friday and Saturday, February fourteenth and fifteenth. We send our good luck wishes with Tim and Tyler!

On Thursday, February sixth, during the Niobrara Valley Conference Tournament the Lady Cardinals faced the Stuart Lady Broncos to decide who would be the champions of the West. The Cardinals defeated the Broncos with a score 33 to 31. Leading scorers were Christine Troshynski with seventeen points and Kara Garman with seven points.

Then the Lady Cards went on to face the Elgin Pope John Crusaders in the Championship round of the NVC Tournament. The NVC West champions faced the NVC East champions. The Cardinals were defeated with a score of 30 to 60 as they accepted second place in the sixteen-team NVC tournament.

The Cardinals faced the Butte Wildcats yet again on Tuesday, February eleventh. The Cardinals were victorious with a score of 58-42. Laura Cameron led the offense with fourteen points followed by Kara Garman and Christine Troshynski with thirteen points each. The girls head to Chambers on Friday night for an end-of-the-season match-up with the Lady Coyotes before they begin sub-district action against Butte at West Holt on Tuesday.

 

In boys basketball action, the junior varsity and varsity boys hosted the Butte Wildcats. The jv won with the score of 46-22. The varsity boys won with the score of 71-35. On Friday the Cardinals will play the Chambers Coyotes at Chambers in marathon competition starting at four o'clock.
