Good afternoon welcome to another edition of St. Mary's school news. I am Jordon Anderson. And I am Matt Schaaf. Let's take a look at all the events that are happening this week.
This week is Catholic Schools Week. This year's theme is "Making a World of Difference." To celebrate this special week, the grade school students will be going bowling today, tomorrow, and Friday. The high schoolers had a jean day today and were allowed to watch movies in the afternoon
The student council is planning the all-school Mass that will be held Friday morning at 8:10 a.m. The student council will also host the social that will follow the Mass in the grade school gym. The social is in celebration of Catholic Schools Week. Parents, friends, and supporters of St. Mary's are invited to attend.
Prize-A-Day calendars are being sold from now until January thirty-first. The cost is twenty-five dollars per calendar. Prizes will be awarded to the top-selling classes and the top-selling students. First prize for the top-selling class is seventy-five dollars. Second prize is fifty dollars. Third prize is twenty-five dollars. First prize for the top-selling student is one hundred dollars. Second prize is seventy-five dollars, and third prize is fifty dollars. Calendars can be bought from any K-12 student or from the Parish Center.
This week's senior profile is on Tim Krugman. He is the son of Dale and Susan Krugman of rural O'Neill. He is eighteen years old and has attended St. Mary's for thirteen years. This year Tim is involved in football. In his spare time he likes to sleep. After high school, Tim plans to go to a two-year college. His major is undecided.
Now let's see what has been happening in sports. All the teams have been very busy.
The junior varsity wrestlers participated in two meets this past week. Tim Krugman competed in the Clearwater Dual on January sixteenth and finished first. Tim Krugman also participated in the Neligh meet on January eighteenth and finished second. Shane Isom also competed at this meet.
The next varsity wrestling meet is the O'Neill-Creighton Dual at O'Neill tomorrow.
On Saturday, January twenty-fifth the junior high girls basketball team participated in the Spencer-Naper Booster Club tournament. They were defeated in their first game by Butte and then prevailed over Lynch. They earned third place in the tournament.
On Monday, January twenty-seventh the girls traveled to Ewing to participate in another tournament. The team lost to Clearwater and then defeated Orchard. They placed third in this tournament also.
Congratulations to the junior high boys basketball team for placing second at the Spencer-Naper tournament last Sunday. The boys first played Butte and won and then lost to Spencer for second place. Yesterday the junior high boys played Chambers at St. Mary's. Both A and B teams won. Tomorrow, January 30th, the junior high boys will travel to play Page at 6:30.
In high school action the junior varsity girls' basketball team defeated the Stuart Lady Broncos 23-15 last Friday. Their next game is Tuesday, February 11, at five p.m. against the Butte Lady Wildcats at St. Mary's.
In varsity action the Lady Cardinals traveled to Stuart on January twenty-fourth to be defeated by the Lady Broncos 33 to 45. Leading scorers were Christine Troshynski with seventeen points and fourteen rebounds and Laura Cameron with five points and five rebounds.
Then the Lady Cards traveled to Lynch to defeat the Lady Eagles 59 to 45. Leading scorers were Christine Troshynski with thirteen points and seven rebounds and Kara Garman with thirteen points and four rebounds.
The Lady Cardinals traveled to Creighton to take on the Lady Bulldogs and were defeated with a score of 42-35.
The Cardinals will play in the Niobrara Valley Conference on Saturday, February first, Butte. The Lady Cards will play the Butte Lady Wildcats and the game will start at six thirty.
The varsity boys defeated the Stuart Broncos Friday night and turned right around and lost a heart breaker up in Lynch with the score of 68-65. Then on Tuesday the boys traveled to Creighton and with a thrilling last-second shot, defeated the Bulldogs, 59-58. The boys will play the Butte Wildcats in Butte Saturday at 5:00 p.m. for the first round of the Niobrara Valley Conference tournament.
