Good afternoon and welcome to the weekly broadcast of school news
from St. Mary’s High School. I am Gina Hoesing. And I am Matt Schaaf.
After a long Christmas break, the students and the teachers are back
and are ready to get back into the swing of things. The first semester
ended before the Christmas break. And the first semester report cards will
go home next Wednesday, January 15th. So let’s first take a look at the
school activities.
An all-school Benediction will be held this afternoon at three. The
seniors are also planning an all-school Mass that will be held Friday
morning at 8:10.
This week’s senior profile is on Michael Jeffrey. He is the son of Bill
and Jean Jeffrey of O’Neill. He is seventeen years old and has attended St.
Mary’s for twelve years. In his spare time, Michael likes to hunt, take care
of his pickup and car, travel, and go to the mountains. After graduation
Michael plans to attend Eastern Wyoming College in Torrington, Wyoming
and major in wildlife conservation.
Now let’s take a look at junior high sports. On Thursday, December
nineteenth, the seventh grade girls basketball team was defeated by Page.
On Saturday, January eleventh, the eighth grade girls will head to Butte to
play in their basketball tourney. Games will start at 9 a.m. The junior high
boys’ basketball team will compete in their first game of the season here at home against
Ewing on Monday.

Students in high school sports are getting ready to come back to
their seasons after the Christmas break. The varsity wrestlers have had
a nice long break in their season. Their last meet was on Saturday,
December twenty-first, at Valentine. Tyler Cole earned second place. Tim
Krugman also participated in this meet. The junior varsity wrestlers will
end their break with a meet on Friday, January tenth, at Burwell. The
varsity wrestlers will travel to David City on January eleventh.
On Friday, December 20th, the junior varsity Lady Cardinals were
defeated by the Rock County Lady Tigers ________. The jv girls will face the
Pope John Lady Crusaders this Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Pope John.
In varsity basketball, we would like to congratulate the Lady
Cardinals for their victory over the Rock County Tigers with a score of
50-42. Over the Christmas break, the Cardinals traveled to Stuart for their
annual holiday tournament. The Cardinals first competed against the Rock
County Tigers and came out victorious with a score of 42-31. The leading
scorers were Lindsey Kallhoff with thirteen points and ten rebounds,
Theresa Conradt also had thirteen points and six rebounds and Kara
Garman with eleven points and seven rebounds.
Then the Cards faced the Butte Wildcats. The Cardinals came up
short with a score of 46-43. The leading rebounders were Christine
Troshynski with eleven rebounds and twelve points, Theresa Conradt with
eight rebounds and two points and Kristen Carr with seven rebounds and
three points.
The Lady Cardinals’ next game is this Friday, January tenth, at Elgin
Pope John. The games will start at five o’clock. Then on Saturday,
January eleventh, the Cardinals face the Keya Paha Indians at St. Mary’s.
The games will start five o’clock.

The varsity boys basketball team also had a successful run at the
Stuart Holiday tournament. On December 27th the boys clinched a birth in
the championship game by defeating the Wildcats of Butte. The next game
the Cardinals defeated the Broncos of Stuart to receive the Stuart Holiday
Tournament Championship. This Saturday the JV boys and varsity boys
will host the Indians of Keya Paha at 4:00 p.m.
