Welcome, Cardinal fans, to this week’s update of news from Saint Mary’s High School  am Kathryn Fuchser.  And I am Matt Schaaf.  And we thank you for joining us on this beautiful Fall day in November.  It sure is a contrast to the wintry conditions we had last Wednesday!  But it will be great weather for the football game this afternoon which highlights our news this week along with the great efforts and success of the SMH volleyball team.

That’s right, ______________.  Our post season sports competitions do take precedence over other activities at St. Mary’s High School this week.  Last night at Atkinson West Holt the Lady Cardinal volleyball team won the  D2-8 subdistrict competition.  In first round competition the Keya Paha Indians defeated the Lynch Eagles in two sets.  In the second match of the evening the Lady Cardinals defeated the Keya Paha Lady Indians with scores of 15-1 and 15-2.

The Cardinals then went on to play the Butte Lady Wildcats and prevailed over them with scores of 15-5 and 15-7.  The Lady Cardinals move on to the District play-off on Friday.  St. Mary’s will meet Elba who won over Wheeler Central in three sets in the D2 7 sub-districts.

In other volleyball action the Lady Cards were defeated by the Spencer-Naper Lady Pirates on Friday, November first,  during the final rounds of the Niobrara Valley Conference with scores of 15-4, 8-15 and 7-15.  The Lady Cardinals placed fourth out of the fifteen teams that competed in the Niobrara Valley Conference Tournament.

In football action, with the first round of the playoffs in the books, the St. Mary’s Cardinals defeated the Sumner-Eddyville-Miller Mustangs 46-8.  For the second round of the football playoffs the Cardinals face the Twin Valley team today with the kickoff scheduled for 2:00 p.m. here in O’Neill!  So all of you Cardinal fans need to plan on cheering the Cardinals on to another victory this afternoon in their bid to move on to the State final competition.

In other news at St. Mary’s this week the Cardinal mock trial season ended last Thursday when the SMH Red team lost to the Stuart Red team.  The final records for both the Red team and the Blue team were split.  Each tam finished 1-2 for the year.

Yesterday Linda Olsen came to visit the junior theology class.  She

came to speak to the students about dating violence and domestic violence.  She  is employed at Bright Horizons, which is a branch of the office in Norfolk.  She travels to various schools to inform the students and try to prevent domestic abuse.

On Monday, November fourth the juniors took the ASVAB test.  This test is  administered by members of the armed services and helps students identify their interests, so they can decide on a career.  It is also used as a test when entering the armed services.

This week’s senior profile is on Falycia Wagenaar.  Falycia is the daughter of Nick and Alyce Schaaf of Emmet.  She is seventeen years old.  Falycia has attended St. Mary’s for three years.  She transferred to St. Mary’s from Gothenburg High School in Gothenburg, Nebraska during her sophomore year.  She is involved in FBLA and is the student manager for one-acts.  In her spare time Falycia likes to hang out with friends, talk on the phone, and watch television.  After graduation she plans to attend Clarkson College in Omaha and major in nursing.

The high school Mass this morning was planned by Sr. Anita along with the sophomores.  The high school girls sang in the choir.  We want to thank Sr. Anita and the high school classes for all of the efforts they put into planning the liturgy each week.  The Mass this morning was an excellent opportunity for all of the students, teachers, parents, and patrons of St. Mary’s to thank God for all of our successes in our sports activities as well as for all of our opportunities in life.  Thanks, Sister!

One-act play practice has begun!   Director Ms. Goettertz and assistant director Mary Schneider chose the play A Doctor in Spite of Himself.  The cast includes Kylie Ludemann, Will Dougherty, Kathryn Fuscher, Christina Reynoldson, Laura Cameron, Kevin Ohri, Brooke Lindhorst, Sarah Novak, Katie Fletcher, Emily Dugan, Matt McCarville, Jacque Earley, and Lyle Berryman.  The cast practices early each morning to get ready for conference competition to be held on Monday, November eighteenth at Keya Paha.

On Monday, November 11, a Veterans’ Day program will be held at St. Mary’s High School gym at ten o’clock.  Area schools will come to participate; the public is also invited to attend this patriotic salute to our veterans.

That’s all of our news this week.  If you can’t make it out to the football field this afternoon to cheer on the Cardinals,  tune in to KBRX 1350 AM and listen to the St. Mary’s Cardinals football game against Twin Valley.  And follow the volleyball girls to their District play against Elba on Friday!
