Thank you for joining us this afternoon for St. Mary’s Cardinal news.
Well, ____________, we’ve had another busy week here at St. Mary’s High School. Last Friday was the end of the first nine weeks. Students have finished with several mid-term tests and papers as well as the standardized testing for many of the students. Several juniors and seniors will be taking the ACT test here in O’Neill on Saturday! And parents can pick up the first-quarter report cards on Thursday between five o’clock and eight o’clock in the evening during Parent-Teachers Conferences.
The seventh graders planned this morning’s high school Mass. Fr. Eric Olsen was the celebrant.
This week’s Senior Profile is on Kareena Nichols. Kareena is the daughter of Steve and Kathy Nichols. She is seventeen years old and has attended St. Mary’s for thirteen years. Kareena is involved in girls’ golf, track, one-acts, FBLA, and National Honor Society. In her spare time, she like to golf and dance. After graduation Kareena hopes to attend Creighton University in Omaha and major in Pharmacy.
Ms. Goettertz took seventeen juniors to County Government day yesterday. They went to the courthouse, where they learned about the various jobs, such as sheriff and county assessor. They also participated in a mock trial and listened to speakers throughout the day. Each student will write an essay about the day. The essays will be entered into the American Legion Essay Contest. The winners will receive cash prizes of up to fifty dollars.
The St. Mary’s Mock trial Blue and Red teams will compete tommorow at the O’Neill District Courtroom. The Blue team will face the O’Neill Public Blue at 8:30 a.m. The Red team will compete at 10:00 a.m. against the Stuart Blue team.
The Future Business Leaders of America had a meeting on Friday, October 18th, to elect the new officers for the 2002-2003 school year. The president is Matt Willis; vice president is Brooke Earley, and the secretary/treasurer is Kyle Neumann.
The Junior High volleyball teams completed their season at the Pope John tournament held on Saturday, October nineteenth. The Cardinals played as one team for the games. They first played Lyndsey-Holy Family. The Cardinals lost with scores of 5-15 and 10-15. They next faced Neligh-Oakdale; St. Mary’s lost in two sets, 8-15 and 6-15. The seventh grade ended their first volleyball season with a 3-4 record. The eighth grade finished the year with a 2-5 record. The record of the teams that combined seventh and eighth graders was 2-4. Congratulations on a great season.
In high school sports the O’Neill Cross Country Team competed at the District meet at Valentine last Thursday, October 17th. Theresa Conradt finished her season by placing 25th. In boys’ scores, Mitchell Wecker placed 13th, and Daniel Ascherl placed 12th. Both boys will advance to the State meet at Kearney on Friday, October 25th. Good luck at State, Dan and Mitchell!
Last Thursday the junior varsity volleyball team defeated the Lynch Eagles 15-7, 15-6. On Monday the Lady Cards traveled to Clearwater. The C team lost with scores of ____, ____, ____. The B team was defeated with scores of ___, ___. The C team’s record is 4-1. The B team’s record is 7-9. the C and B teams will play their last games this Friday night at SMH. The face Verdigre beginning at 4:00 p.m.
We would like to congratulate the Lady Cardinals on their victory over the Lynch Lady Eagles. The score was 11-15 and 2-15. The Cardinals traveled to Orchard yesterday October 22nd. The first competed against the Lady Orioles. The Cards were defeated by the Orioles ____-____,____-____,and ____-____. The Cardinals then went on to defeat the Plainview Pirates. The scores to that match were ____-____,____-____, and ____-____.
The Cardinals will play against the Verdigre Hawks this Friday, October 26th, on Parents’ Night. The Cardinals record is 11-5.
The Cardinal varsity football team faced Lynch last Thursday and defeated the Eagles 48-0. The number one ranked Cardinals were led by the hands of Dan Haggerty. Haggerty had seven receptions for 155 yards and four touchdowns. Ryan Hickey rushed the ball 14 times with 120 yards and one touchdown. Kiel Neumann had ten tackles. The Cardinals will host the Verdigre Hawks this Friday. The Junior Varsity team traveled to Clearwater this past Monday and were defeated 48-0. The Junior varsity’s final record was two wins and two losses.
Remember that school will be dismissed after fourth period at the high school on Friday. The volleyball games start at four o’clock and Parents night for all fall sports and activities will be held between the junior varsity and varsity volleyball games and at half-time of the football game! Also remember that TIME CHANGES this weekend, so set your clocks and be on time for school next Monday!
