I am Laura Cameron. And I am Gina Hoesing. We are here to bring you this week’s news from the halls of St. Mary’s Schools.
Last Thursday, October 10th, Greg Schleppenbach came to St. Mary’s High School to give a presentation on cloning and stem cell research. The presentation covered the moral issues involved and the church’s viewpoint on those controversial issues. The students were invited to ask questions and received handouts. Schleppenbach plans on traveling throughout Nebraska.
In class news the fifth grade will be welcoming a new student to their class next week. Heather Vandersnick will join the fifth grade class on Monday, October 21.
The sixth grade is planning a special all-school Mass for Friday at 8:10 a.m. This Mass is for National Children’s Day. Everyone is invited to attend. A social will follow in the grade school gym.
In the high school Friday marks the end of the first quarter of school. Parent-Teachers Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, October 24th from five until eight in the evening in the Parish Hall.
The juniors took the PSAT yesterday, October 15th. The PSAT is a practice test for the SAT. It helps the students know what to expect when taking college entrance exams and gives the students an idea of their expected score on the SAT. The PSAT scores are also used to determine the recipients of the National Merit Scholarships. The highest scores from the tests will be entered into a national competition. 8,000 scholarships worth $2,500 each, will be awarded nationally.
The seniors will be delivering the bread they sold for their fundraiser.
This week’s Senior Profile is on Adam Koenig. Adam is the son of Maurice and
Anita Koenig of O’Neill. He is seventeen years old and has attended St. Mary’s for thirteen
years. Adam is involved in football, basketball, baseball, and track. In his spare time, he
likes to hunt, fish, and do other outdoor sports. After high school, Adam plans to attend
Wichita State University and major in Aerospace Engineering.
Mock Trial competition was held this morning at the Holt County District Courtroom. At 8:30 a.m. the Stuart Red team presented the plaintiff’s case against O’Neill St. Mary’s Red team as the defendent. St. Mary’s Red defeated/won over Stuart. The St. Mary’s Red team will move on in the winner’s/loser’s bracket. The O’Neill High School Red team as plaintiff competed against St.Mary’s Blue team as defendent at ten o’clock this morning. The St. Mary’s Blue fell to/was defeated by O’Neill High School’s Red team. The winners will advance in the winners’ bracket and the losers will drop to the losers’ bracket for their next competition. The mock trial problem this year simulates a criminal case in which the defendent is alleged to have stalked a cooperating prosecution witness by sending threatening e-mail messages. The trials are held in the District Courtrooms in Basset and O’Neill, and they are open to the public. The next trials are scheduled for Thursday, October 24th.
On Thursday, October tenth, the junior high volleyball teams traveled to Atkinson to face the Lady Huskies. The seventh grade lost in two sets 15-11, 15-1. The eighthth grade was also defeated in two sets, 15-9, 15-3.
Then on Monday, October 14, the junior high Lady Cardinals faced the Pope John Crusaders at home. The seventh grade lost with scores of 16-14, 7-15, and 3-15. The eighth grade prevailed with scores of 15-5, 14-16, 15-10.
The junior high volleyball teams’ next games are Saturday, October 19, when they travel to Pope John for a tournament starting at 9 a.m.
Monday, October 14, was the last junior high football game in their season. They defeated Pope John with the final score 46-6. The junior high Cardinal football team finished 3-1 on the season.
In high school sports last Thursday, October tenth, the junior varsity volleyball team conquered the Ewing Tigers. The Lady Cards won with scores of 15-7, 15-4. Their record is now 5-8. The C and B teams will travel to Clearwater on Monday to face the Cardinals at 7:00 p.m.
In varsity sports the O’Neill Cross Country Team competed at the Rangeland Conference Meet at Valentine on October tenth. Theresa Conradt placed tenth for the girls’ team. Mitchell Wecker placed fifth for the boys’ team, and Dan Ascherl was the Rangeland Conference Champion. The boys placed first as a team. The next cross country meet will take place tomorrow at Valentine. The top two teams and the top fifteen individual runners for the boys and the girls will advance to the State meet in Kearney on October 25th.
We would like to congratulate the Lady Cardinal varsity volleyball team for their victory over the Ewing Tigers with scores of 15-10, 11-15, and 15-12. Laura Cameron led the team with sixteen assists and ten points. Staci Givens had seven digs and twelve assists. Kara Garman also had seven digs, eight kills and ten points. Christine Troshynski had six digs and seventeen kills. Kristen Carr had seven digs. Brooke Earley had ten points. Michelle Shoemaker, Emily Walnofer,, Kathryn Fuchser and Kristen Carr all had flawless serving.
The Lady Cardinals traveled to Orchard on Monday, October 14th, to take part in the Orchard Triangular. The Cards played the Stuart Broncos first and won with scores of 15-__ and 15-__. The Cardinals then had to face the Orchard Orioles and lost to the host birds with scores of 7-15, 15-3, and 9-15.
The Cardinal volleyball team will play against the Lynch Eagles tomorrow night at Lynch. The games start at five o’clock. Then the varsity team will return to Orchard on Tuesday, October 22nd, for another triangular with Plainview and Orchard and a re-match between the Cardinals and the Orioles. Games on Tuesday begin at five o’clock in Orchard. The Lady Cardinals’ record is 9-4.
The Cardinal varsity football team took on the Ewing Tigers last Thursday night at O’Neill. The Cardinals defeated the Tigers 50-0. Ryan Hickey ran for 92 yards on ten carries with one touchdown. Dan Haggerty caught eight balls for 88 yards and one touchdown. Kiel Neumann had twelve tackles for the Cardinals. The Cardinals will take on the Eagles of Lynch this Thursday at seven thirty. The Cardinal JV team took on Butte last Monday. The Cardinals defeated the Wildcats 36-8. The JV team will take on the Clearwater Cardinals on Monday at five o’clock at Clearwater.
