Good afternoon.  I am Kathryn Fuchser.  And I am Emily Walnofer.  

      We join you this afternoon on KBRX with this week’s broadcast of St. Mary’s High School news.

      This morning St. Mary’s students and faculty attended the regular weekly Mass.  The ninth grade planned this morning’s liturgy,  and the high school girls sang in the choir.

      Tonight there is a meeting in Church for all new adult lectors and EME’s of the parish.  The meeting will start at seven o’clock.

      The seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students have been taking the Iowa Test of Basic Skills throughout the week and will continue through the rest of the week. Students are encouraged to be well rested for these tests.

 

      Tomorrow, Thursday,  Greg Schlettenbach will give a speech on Pro-Life, cloning, and stem cell research.  This will begin at 8:10 in the morning in St. Mary’s High School gym.  You are welcome to come.

 

      In Mock trial competition the St. Mary’s Red team competed yesterday against the O’Neill High School Blue team in the Holt County District courtroom.  The St. Mary’s Red team won the competition.  The Red team features Matt Willis, Michelle Shoemaker and Kiel Neumann as attorneys and Christine Troshynski, Brooke Earley, Megan Davis, Jordon Anderson, and Kylie Ludemann as witnesses.  Other members of the Red team are Tom Fletcher and Chris Havranek.  The Red team will compete against the Stuart Red team next Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. here in O’Neill.

     

 

      The St. Mary’s mock trial Blue team consists of Emily Walnofer, Jesse Peetz, and Zach Ascherl as attorneys.  Matt McCarville, Bill Dougherty, Jacque Early, Brooke Lindhorst, Serenity Butterfield, and Christina Reynoldson are witnesses. The Blue team will compete against the O’Neill High School Red team/the Stuart Blue team next Wednesday, October 16th,  at 10:00 a.m. here in O’Neill.

 

      The FBLA season is finally getting underway.  Tony Allen is the adviser for FBLA.  There will be a meeting tomorrow after school to discuss this year’s plans.

     

 

      This week’s Senior Profile features Christine Troshynski.  Christine is the daughter of Jim and Betti Troshynski.  Christine is 18 years old.  In 1998, she moved to O’Neill from Randolph, Nebraska.  She has attended St. Mary’s for five years.  Christine is involved in volleyball, basketball, track, mock trial, National Honor Society, FBLA, and the high school church choir.  She is also an editor for the school newspaper and yearbook. In her spare time, she likes to hang out with friends and spend time with her family.  After high school Christine plans to attend the University of Nebraska at either Lincoln or Omaha and major in computer science.

 

      The Cardinal athletes and fans have had a busy week with sports activities!

 

     On Thursday, October third,  the junior high volleyball teams faced the Orchard Orioles at home. The seventh grade lost in two sets: 8-15 and 14-16. The eighth grade prevailed in three sets: 15-4, 8-15, and 15-10. The junior high Lady Cardinals travel to Atkinson tomorrow, October 10, to face the Lady Huskies. Games start at 6:00. 

 

     

      On Monday Spencer Naper came to O’Neill to play junior high football.  The young Cardinal  boys had a tough game and came out short 34-28.  The next game is another home game.  St. Mary’s meets Pope John next Monday, October fourteenth, starting at three o’clock.  This game is the final junior high football game of the season.

 

      In cooperative sports competition the O’Neill Cross Country team competed at the West Holt Invite last Friday.  The boys’ team placed first overall.  Individually Daniel Ascherl placed first; Mitchell Wecker placed tenth; and Theresa Conradt placed nineteenth.  The next cross country meet is tomorrow at Valentine.

 

      The girls’ golf team had two meets last week.  Last Thursday, October third, they competed at Pender.  Kareena Nichols scored a 47.  On Saturday, October fifth, the golfers competed at Oakdale, and Kareena scored a 100, which earned her fifteenth place.  The girls’ golf team also had districts this week.  The district golf meet was held in Columbus on Monday.  Kareena scored a 113, and the team placed fourth.

 

      In Niobrara Valley Conference volleybal action the Lady Cards B and C volleyball  teams faced the Orchard Orioles at home last Thursday.  The C team was defeated 15-10, 12-15, 8-15.  The JV team also fell short 15-9, 11-15, 12-15.  On Friday the C team defeated Stuart 11-15, 15-9, 15-12.  Once again the junior varsity Cards fell short 12-15, 15-12, 15-9.

      The Lady Cardinal varsity volleyball team traveled to Stuart last Friday and defeated the Lady Broncos 15-12 and 15-11 in rematch play.  The Lady Cardinals will play against the Ewing Tigers tomorrow at St. Mary’s.  The games will start at five o’clock.  The Lady Cardinals’ record is 7-3.

 

      In football action the Junior Varsity football team was defeated by the Spencer-Naper Pirates this past Monday 46-0. The Cardinal JV team will host the Butte Wildcats this coming Monday.

      And finally in varsity play the St. Mary’s varsity football team took on the Stuart Broncos last Friday night. The number one ranked Cardinals defeated the Broncos 64-8.  Dan Haggerty led the way in receiving.  Haggerty caught six passes for 116 yards and one touchdown.  Jed Givens had thirteen attempts with 79 yards rushing and one touchdown. The top ranked Cardinals will host the Ewing Tigers this Thursday night at seven o’clock.
