I am Laura Cameron. And I am Emily Walnofer. We are here this afternoon with St. Mary’s weekly broadcast of Cardinal school news!
This morning an all-school Mass was held. The fifth grade planned the Mass
Fall activity pictures for junior high and senior high school students are tomorrow. Van Allan of Norforl will take the group pictures for the yearbook. Picitures start at 8:30!
Mock Trial is just getting started with competition scheduled to get started after the
first of October. The case this year will be on “Internet Stalking”. Mrs. Quanna Laursen is
the coach. Twenty-two SMH students will split up into two teams for the Mock Trial
competitions.
One Act play competion is coming up soon. Tryouts for this year’s one acts will be held at the end of September. Director Jennifer Goettertz is looking into plays that have English accents. She wants to challenge the students and brighten their horizons.
The preschool has had a good start to the year. Twenty-eight children are enrolled in the preschool program this year. Twelve children are in the Monday-Wednesday-Friday afternoon program. Eight children are in the Monday-Wednesday-Friday morning program and eight children are in the Tuesday-Thursday morning program.
The seventh grade class officers are president Leah Reiman, vice president Jake
Reiman, secretary Katlyn Miles, and student council represenative Matt Wecker.
The eighth grade class started the school year by selecting class officers. Class
president is Meghan Boyle; vice president is Justin Podany; secretary/treasurer is Jenna
Connot; and student council representative is Sloane Schnieder.
The freshmen class can finally say that they are in high school. Now they have to start all over again from the bottom to the top. Freshman class president is Elizabeth
Willis; vice-president is Tim Shoemaker; secretary/treasurer is Anne Kersenbrock; and the student council rep is Katie Fletcher. The freshman class sponsor is Tony Allen.
Newly elected sophomore class officers are president, Sarah Novak; vice-president, Brooke Lindhorst; secretary/treasurer, Rachael Gray; and student class representative, Christina Reynoldson.
The juniors kicked off the new school year by electing class officers. Class
president is Gina Hoesing; vice-president is Nick Welding; secretary is Laura Cameron;
treasurer is Tyler Cole; and student council representative is Jordon Anderson. The junior class will hold a split-the-pot fund-raiser at all home volleyball and football games.
The money raised will help the junior class pay for prom.
The seniors voted on class officers. President is Jed Givens; vice president is Dan Ascheral; secretary/treasurer is Brooke Earley; and student council representative is Mike Simons. The seniors are selling bread to raise money for their class trip this spring. Several different kinds of bread that will be available until September 23. Contact any member of the senior class for more information or to place an order.
The drill team has been practicing hard and will perform at all the home football
and basketball games. New members include freshmen Katie Fletcher and Elizabeth Willis
and junior Emily Walnofer. Other members include senior Brooke Earley, juniors Kara
Garmen, Emily Dugan, Kathryn Fuchser, and Megan Davis, sophmores Brooke Lindhorst,
Christina Reynoldson, Jacque Earley, and Sarah Novak. Sue Pongratz and Trisha
Thompson are returning as sponsors.
Give me an “S”, give me an “M”, and give me an “H”. What’s that spell? Cheerleading season. What a way to start the new year with almost a whole new squad! The new cheerleading sponsors are Camille Ohri and Linda Schneider. The new senior cheerleaders are Kristen Carr, Brooke Earley, and Staci Givens. The new junior cheerleaders are Kara Garman and Megan Davis. The second year returning cheerleader is Lyndsey Kallhoff and third year returning cheerleader is Emily Walnofer.
The squad recently purchased new uniforms. So come to the football games and see the cheerleaders and the new Cardinal mascot! Thanks to the booster club, this bird will surely show his spirit. Dan Ascherl wears the Cardinal mascot costume!
In St. Mary’s sports news we’ve had many competitions in volleyball, football, cross coutry, and golf!
On Saturday, September 14, the junior high volleyball teams traveled to Stuart for a tournament. The seventh grade team played Orchard first. They lost 15-12, 15-1. They then faced O’Neill Public and were defeated 16-14, 15-10. The eighth grade team started the day by playing Butte. They lost to the Wildcats in three sets, 15-1, 10-15, 15-9. Their next game was against O’Neill Public. The Cardinals fell short in three sets, 7-15, 15-4, 15-10.
Last night, the teams traveled to Ewing. The seventh grade won/lost with a score of
___-___, ___-___, ___-___. The eighth grade won/was defeated by a score of ___-___,
___-___, ___-___.
The next game for both teams will be Saturday, September 21. St. Mary’s junior high girls will compete in the St. Mary’s tournament here in O’Neill beginning at 9 a.m. Then on Monday, September 23 the junior high volleyball teams will travel to Niobrara. Games start at 3 p.m.
St. Mary’s junior high football season will begin next week September. The eighteen seventh and eighth grade boys started practice on August 26. Head coach Tim Schneider and assitant coaches Chris Slack and John Schindler are preparing the boys for their first game at Niobrara. On Monday, September 23, the team will travel to Niobrara to play at four o’clock. The boys have four games total -- two of those games will be played at O’Neill. The away games are Monday at Niobrara and September 30th at Lynch.
The O’Neill Cross Country team competed at Norfolk Catholic last Friday. For the boys’ team, Dan Ascherl placed sixth and Mitchell Wecker placed fifteenth. For the girls’ team, Theresa Conradt placed sixteenth. The next cross country meet is this Friday, September 20th, at Ewing.
The Girl’s Golf team has had a very busy week. On the 12th, they participated in a duel with Pierce. Kareena Nichols had a score of 56. Then on Saturday, the 14th, they had another meet with Pierce. At this meet Kareena had a score of a 108. On Monday,
September 16th, the O’Neill Invitational was held, and Kareena scored another 108. Her next golf meet is at Albion on Friday, the 21st.
The Junior Varsity volleyball team defeated Butte last Friday, 15-17, 15-3, and 10-15. The Cards faced Orchard in the Freshman/Sophomore Tournament Saturday. They were defeated 4-15, 13-15. The Lady Cards later faced Chambers. The Cards lost 13-15, 10-15. The Junior Varsity team is showing improvement. Last night the C and B teams faced the O’Neill Eagles. The final score of the C game was ________, ___________. The B game resulted in scores of ________, ___________. The Junior Varsity team will participate in a tournament held in Stuart on Saturday.
We would like to say congratulations to the SMH varsity volleyball girls for placing first in the Clearwater Quadrangular. Last Friday the Cardinals traveled to Butte and defeated the Lady Wildcats with scores of 5 - 15 , 15- 7 , and 15- 8 .
On Saturday, September 21st, the Lady Cardinals will travel to Stuart to participate in the Stuart Tourney. The Lady Cards will play Butte in the first round which will begin at _____.
The Cardinal varsity football team traveled to Butte last Friday night to take on the Wildcats. The Cardinals crushed the Wildcats 52-0. The Cardinals were led in rushing by Senior I-back Ryan Hickey with 91 yards on five carries and one touchdown. Jed Givens followed Hickey in rushing with 59 yards on six carries and three touchdowns. Mike Simons led the Cardinals in passing completing four out of six for 78 yards and one touchdown. Dan Haggerty had three receptions for 76 yards and one touchdown for 50 yards. Adam Koeing led the way in defense with six tackles. Kiel Neumann had five tackles and one fumble recovery. Givens had five tackles and two fumble recoveries; and Tim Krugman had five tackles. The Cardinals are ranked number one in the Huskerland, number two in the Lincoln Journal Star, and number three in the Omaha World Herald. The Orchard Orioles come to O’Neill this Friday with the game kicking off at seven thirty. Junior varsity football gets underway Monday at Niobrara at six o’clock.
