Welcome to this afternoon’s segment of St. Mary’s school news.

This morning the eighth grade class ministered the 8:10 a.m. high
school Mass which was planned by Sister Anita. Father Lydell Lape
celebrated the Mass. John Hurley read the day’s scripture readings and
John McCarville read the petitions. Ministers of the Eucharist were Katie
Cameron, Joe Pongratz, Stacey Zakrzewski, Lyle Berryman, and Tom
Fletcher.
Several SMH students had traveled to Norfolk on Sunday, November
4th to be trained as lectors and Extra-ordinary Ministers of the Eucharist
for St. Patrick’s Parish in the Omaha Archdiocese. They returned to
Norfolk on Tuesday, November 6th, to attned a Mass at 7:30 p.m. at St.
Mary’s Church in Norfolk for the mandation ceremony. New lectors are
Stevn Binkerd, Jed Givens, Aaron Troester, and Ashley Braun. The new
EME’s are Dan Ascherl, Lyle Berryman, Brooke Earley, Tom Fletcher, Brent
Kelly, Adam Koenig, Kiel Neumann, Michelle Shoemaker, Jessica
Timmerman, Matt Willis, and Stacey Zakrzewski.
Congratulations goes out to the one-act play team for placing second
at the Niobrara Valley Conference one-act competition at Stuart on
Monday with the play “Do Not Go Gentle.” A public performance will be
held at St. Mary’s High School gym on December 2.
In class news this week the kindergarten children have been busy
making and tallking about Indians They have also been counting the days
until Thanksgiving and blending letters to make news words. The
kindergarteners said the week has been fun and they are all looking forward
to Thanksgiving.
Last Friday the SMH Student Council sponsord a junior high dance
from 7:00 until 10:00 p.m. According to Mrs. Atkeson, Student Council
sponsor, the turnout was “Very good. Everyone seemed to enjoy
themselves.”
On Monday the St. Mary’s junior high and high school students
attended the Veteran’s Day program at O’Neill High School. SMH Principal
Jim Troshynski presented diplomas from St. Mary’s High School to
veterans Mellvin L. Blum, James E. Gallagher, and Andrew Joseph Ramold.
Congratulations to all of the vaterans who received dipoomas that day!
The St. Mary’s cheerleaders have been busy. Members of the
cheerleading squad include Captain Shannon Holz, seniors Mary
Kersenbrock and Ashley Braun, sophomore Emily Walnofer, and freshmen
Rachael Gray and Courney Petersen. The cheerleader’s sponsor is Mrs.
Denise Litz.
The cheerleaders were busy during the football seaoson as they
performed on several occasions including Homecoming when they
performed a dance composed by Shannon Holz and Ashley Braun. The
girls have and stunts and dances to a new level of extreme which involves
the one-person stunt throw. We hope to see more of this in the future.
St. Mary’s has one member, Alex Ascherl, on the O’Neill Eagle junior
high wrestling team this year. Alex traveled to Creighton last night and
won a match and lost a match. Alex and his team will participate in the
Plainview Invitational tomorrow, Thursday, November 15, at 3:30 p.m.

It is once again that time of year for wrestling to begin. St. Mary’s will co-op with
the O’Neill Public school again for this year’s season. The 2001-2002 wrestling season
will officially start this Friday with a potluck supper at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall, at 6
o’clock p.m.
Wrestlers from St. Mary’s include, senior Aaron Troester, juniors Dan Ascherl
and Tim Krugman, and sophomore Tyler Cole. We wish the wrestling team good luck on
their upcoming season.
The high school girls’ basketball tam started practice Monday,
November 12. The coaches this year are head coach Jim Troshynski and
assistant coach M.J. Kersenbrock. Sixteen girls are out for basketball this
year. The girls only have a few practices before thier first game on
Thursday, November 29 at Clearwater starting with a junior varsity game at
5:00 p.m.
The Cardinal Basketball team is loking foward to a successful season
returning a lot of experienced players. The Cardinals will look to improve
upon a 14-8 record from the last two seasons and have a goal of making
some noise at the state tournament. The coaches will remain the same
this season with Mike Pardun returning as the head coach
with Tony Allen assisting him. Numbers for the team are looking good with
19 players participating -- one senior, seven juniors, eight sophmores, and
three freshman.
The Cardinals’ first game is at the Clearwater Cardinals’ court on
November 29, followed the next night with a game against the Orchard
Orioles in Orchard.
