KBRX News

November 7, 2001

Good afternoon. I am Jed Givens. And I am Ryan Hickey.

Thank you for joining us on this great afternoon in November.

The SMH Mock Trial Blue team highlights our news this afternoon.

The SMH Blue team, who is the East Division Mock Trial Champion, began

their trial at one o’clock this afternoon against the Ainsworth Blue team,

who is the West Division Mock Trial Champion, in the final round of district

competition at the the court house in O’Neill. The winning team this

afternoon will advance to the State Mock Trial competition at North Platte

on December 11th and 12th.

Also as part of the co-curricular competition St. Mary’s will

participate in the Niobrara Valley Conference one-act play comtest at

Stuart on Monday, November 12th at 10:45 a.m. The one-act play is “Do

Not Go Gentle.” Cast members are excited about their performance. Good

luck on Monday!

The winner of the Kansas State football tickets was Deb Nekolite

from O’Neill. Jessica Timmerman sold the winning ticket. The seniors

want to thank the Dick Pongratz family for donating the tickets for the

drawing!

On Friday, November 1, the Student Council held a meeting and

discussed many fund-raisers for the school. They will hold a Junior High

Dance this Friday, November 9 at the Parish Hall from 7 o’clock until 9

o’clock. Cost is $3.00 per student. This dance is for seventh and grade

students.

This morning the seventh and ninth grades ministered the 8:10 a.m.

high school Mass which was planned by Sister Anita. Extra Ordinary

Ministers of the Eucharist were Chris Bahrij and newly commissioned

minisiiters Dan Ascherl, Brooke Earley, Brent Kelly, and Michelle

Shoemaker.

This week the kindergarten has been very busy. This week the

kindergarten has been learning how to spell words such as “pop”. They

have also been learning about numbers and talking about what they are

thankful for.

Also from the elementary building, the fifth grade class made prayer

cards and sent them to a Catholic Church in New York City. The Catholic

Church had just lost their priest, Mychal F. Judge, in the tragedy on Sept.

11, 2001. The fifth graders just received a letter from one of the brothers

at the Church, and he thanked them for their prayers and support. Their

prayer cards were put on display at the memorial in the firehouse across

the street from the Church in New York City where they will be seen by the

many people who stop to pause and reflect there each day. Each of the

firemen will take one as a memory of their prayers and support for them as

well.

Junior class members helped out at the Parish Auction held on

Sunday, November 4th. They helped the junior moms make and serve the

chili as a class fund-raiser.

The juniors took the ASVAB test today. The ASVAB is a

multi-aptitude test battery. It helps students identify their different

abilities. ASVAB scores allow students to compare their test performance

to that of other students at the junior grade level.

The Madrigal Feaste is being organized and will be performed on

December 8th and 9th. Times will be announced at a later date. A

number of parts are available in the play as well as in the chorus. Senior

High band and choir will perform. Including the dinner, the entire

performance will last approximately two hours.

On October 31, the St. Mary’s football team faced the Hayes Center

Cardinals in the first round of the State playoffs. With a strong fourth

quarter the Cardinals won 50-32. The Cardinals played a great game

gaining 500 yards of total offense. Ryan Hickey rushed for 154 yards and

three touchdowns while Jed Givens added 121 yards. Mike Simons threw

for 97 yards and one touchdown which came on a 55-yard strike to Matt

Willis. Kiel Neumann and Mike Simons each had 16 tackles and one

interception.

On Monday, November 5, the Cardinals football team took on the

Sargent Bulldogs in the State quarter finals. The Cardinals lost a tough

game 34-14. Dan Haggerty had seven receptions for 97 yards, 18 tackles,

and two interceptions. This year was the first time in 17 years the

Cardinals reached the State quarter finals. The Cardinals ended a great

season with a record of 8-3. Their only three losses of the season came to

teams still alive in the State semi-finals. Congratulations to the Cardinals

on a great season.

We want to thank you for joining us this afternoon.l And we

especially want to thank our sponsors
