Good afternoon. I am Kristen Carr. And I am Kiel Neumann.
We are here this afternoon with our Halloween edition of St. Mary’s school news.

Monday evening the high school held the first-quarter
Parent-Teacher conferences. The turn- out was excellent. Thanks to all of
the parents who took time to come in and talk with the teachers!
Linda Olson, program director from Bright Horizons, spoke to Sr.
Anita’s junior religion class yesterday and this morning. She presented
information on domestic violence, dating violence, and personal safety.
Tomorrow, November 1st is a Holy Day. We will celebrate the
All Saints Day with the all-school Mass ministered by the grade school at
8:10 a..m.
The high school youth choir under the direction of Lisa Lueninghoener will
sing.
The semi-final round of the mock trial competition will begin tomorrow morning at
9:00 a.m. at the Holt County Court House here in O’Neill. Only two teams are still
competing from the east division -- St. Mary’s Blue team and Spencer Naper. The west
division also has two teams left, Ainsworth Blue and Stuart, who compete today in semi
final action. The winner of our east division and the winner of the west division will then
compete in a final round on November 7th at 1:00 p.m. in the O’Neill district court.. The
winner of the November 7th competition will go to the State competition on December
11th and 12th at North Platte.
The St. Mary’s cheerleaders held a Pep Rally for the boys’ football
team to wish them good luck at the State play-offs and for the girls’ volleyball team for a
successful subdistricts. The cheerleaders awarded prizes to the winners of the various
competitions. Mr. Pardun, Brent Kelly, and Aaron Troester received some of the top
prizes for their drill team performances!
The Cardinal varsity volleyball team played the Verdigre Hawks in
the Final Four of the Niobrara Valley Conference on Thursday, October
25th. The Hawks took the win in two sets, 4-15, 16-18. The Cardinals
placed fourth in the Conference.
Last night the Lady Cardinals met Lynch in the first round of
sub-district action at Atkinson West Holt High School. They defeated the
Lynch Eagles in two games, 15-7 and 15-6. In the second round, the
Lady Cardinals faced the Chambers Coyotes. The Cardinals lost in two
long games, 15-13 and 15-6. The Lady Cardinals ended their 2001
volleyball season with an 11-10 record. District action will be at West Holt
High School in Atkinson Friday night with the Chambers Coyotes meeting
the Verdigre Hawks.
Last Thursday the St. Mary’s football team traveled to Chambers to
take on a very tough Coyote team. The Cardinals battled the whole game
and pulled away in the fourth quarter to win 48-25. By winning, the
Cardinals captured the D2-6 District Championship and ended the regular
season with a record of 7-2. Mike Simons played a great game. He passed
for 134 yards and three touchdowns, ran for 117 yards and one
touchdown, and had 16 tackles. Mike was named KEXL athlete of the seek
for his efforts! Dan Haggerty had three receptions for 81 yards and two
touchdowns as well as an interception on defense. Matt Willis had five
receptions for 47 yards and one touchdown as well as a 75-yard kickoff
return for a score. Kiel Neumann led the defense with 18 tackles and Jed
Givens added 16 tackles. Today the St. Mary’s football team will take on
the Hayes Center Cardinals in the first round of the State Playoffs. Kickoff
time will be 7:00 p.m. in O’Neill.
