Good afternoon. I am Tom Fletcher. And I am Ryan Hickey. We are here this afternoon to bring you this week’s news from St. Mary’s High School.


There will be an all -school Mass this Friday, October 19. The high
school students are preparing the Mass with Sister Anita.
The sixth grade class will have “M&M Day” on Thursday. On M&M day,
the sixth graders help the first graders add and subtract with M&Ms. They
complete a packet by the end of the day!
The junior class has really been busy this week! The juniors first took the
PSAT tests for about four hours yesterday morning. Last night they worked at
the concession stand to raise money for the prom next spring and today they are
attending County Government Day here in O’Neill. Tomorrow those juniors and
seniors on the Mock Trial Blue team will be competing against the
Spencer-Naper team. Good luck, everyone!
The senior class will sell tickets until October 30th for a drawing for three
UNL vs. Kansas State football tickets. They will draw one winner for the three
football tickets. The seats are located in the south endzone for the game
schedule for November 10th. The drawing will be either at the sub-district
volleyball game onTuesday, October 30th or at the first round of the football
sub-districts on Wednesday, October 31st. Winners will be contacted after the
drawing.
The Student Council is busy with a few projects this time of year. Right
now Jed Givens and Mike Simons are organizing the paper truck once every
week. The Goodwill truck will be organized about four or five times a year. The
entire Student Council will participate in this activity. Right now, the Student
Council is in the process of organizing a junior high dance. Details will be given
when it has been further planned.
The Future Business Leaders of America will have a meeting on
Wednesday, October 17, this afternoon, at 3:06. We will discuss and plan the
work schedule for the Parish Auction.
And turning to the Cardinal sports news , last Thursday, October 11th,
at Cross Country districts in Albion Dan Ascherl placed 8th, and Zach Ascherl placed
26th. Dan will be going to State Cross Country which is held in Kearney this
Friday October 19th. Good luck, Dan!
Saturday October 13th the Junior High girls volleyball team ended their
season at Elgin with two wins and one loss in the Pope John Invitational. The
first game the junior high Lady Cardinals took on Elgin and won in two sets 15-7
and 15-1. The second game was against Elgin Pope John, which they also won
15-13, 11-15, and 15-11. In the championship game they faced Neligh and lost
with scores of 6-15, and 5-15. This gave them the runner-up position.
The freshman volleyball team ended its season Monday night in a tough loss to
the Clearwater Lady Cardinals, 15-12, 8-15, 10-15. The freshmen end their
season with a 1-7 record.
The JV volleyball team played an exciting game last night which ended in
a three- set loss, 14-16, 15-9, 9-15. The junior
varsity Lady Cardinals will play tomorrow in Ewing. Their bus will leave at 4:15.

St. Mary’s varsity volleyball team played the Butte Wildcats on October
11. With scores of 15-4, 15-10, the Cardinals came out with a victory. The
Cardinals hosted the St. Mary’s Triangular last night. St. Mary’s defeated
Plainview in three sets, 8-15, 15-11, and 15-7. In the last game of the evening,
the Cardinals lost to the Orchard Orioles in two sets, 14-16 and 11-15.
The Cardinals will travel to Ewing tomorrow for games starting at 5:15.
The bus will leave at 4:15 from the high school.
The Niobrara Valley Conference tournaments which were set on the
school calendar for October 25th, are scheduled to begin on Monday, October
22. The Cardinals will play in Chambers at 6:15 against the Stuart Broncos.
the second game is scheduled to be held at Pope John on Tuesday, October 23.
The St. Mary’s junior varsity football team ended their season Monday
night with a very hard fought loss to the Clearwater Cardinals. They were down
28-14 at halftime and came back in the second half to cut the deficit to 28-26,
but were unable to score again.
Ryan Kelly ran for one touchdown as well as catching another. Nick
Welding threw three touchdown passes on the night, one to Ryan Kelly, and two
to Kevin Ohri.
The Cardinal football team took on the Butte Wildcats last Thursday.
They came out fired up and totally dominated the game to win 58-14. The
Cardinals gained 490 yards of total offense and gave up just 179 yards. Ryan
Hickey led the team in rushing with 124 yards on 11 carries with one touchdown.
Mike Simons led the team in passing completing seven out of ten passes for 116
yards and three touchdowns. Matt Willis led the team in receiving with four
catches for 50 yards and one touchdown. The Cardinal record now stands at
5-2. Tomorrow they will travel to Ewing to take on the Tigers at 8:00 p.m.
