Good afternoon. I am Chris Havranek. And I am Jed Givens. We are here this

afternoon to bring you the weekly news from St. Mary’s High School.

Congratulations to both St. Mary’s Mock Trial Red and Blue teams for winning the

Mock Trial competition on Monday against O’Neill High School. The Red team

members are Attorneys Kyle Ludemann, Emily Walnofer and Jesse Peetz; Applicants

Megan Davis, Kiel Neumann and Jordon Anderson; and Objectors Nick Nord, Steven

Binkerd and Megan Davis. The Blue team members are Attorneys-Mary Kersenbrok,

Michelle Shoemaker and Brent Kelly; Applicants Christine Troshynski, Staci Givens and

Matt Willis; and Objectors Brooke Earley, Aaron Troester, and Christine Troshynski.

This morning the high school Mass was celebrated by Fr. Lydell Lape. Sister

Anita planned the liturgy with the seventh graders.

Mr. Bahrij will be taking his Physic class to sioux Falls this Friday for a field trip

to the Augustana College Science Day. Students include Chris Bahrij, Steven

Binkerd, Dan Haggerty,Shannon Holz, Brent Kelly, Mary Kersenbrock, and

Aaron Troester. The group will hear two keynote speakers Dr. Craig Spencer

and Dr. John lLarkin. They will speack on using mud, mules, and satellites to

study the effects of timber harvest on water quality in the Rocky Mountains and

the Mysteries of the Universe repectively. Each student will also experience two

hands-on science sessions from among twenty-eight sessions offered. They will

depart from St. Mary’s High School at five o’clock Friday morning!

Tomorrow the SMH drill team will dance at halftime of the varsity football game

against Butte. The drill team is also planning the Fall sports and activities

Parents’ night for tomorrow. Senior volleyball players and parents will receive

special recognition between the B and A volleyball games. The parents and

senior cheerleaders, drill team members and football players will be recognized

during half-time of the football game.

Mr. Clark Gellerman, the new band and choir teacher here at St. Mary’s, is getting the

two grade school bands ready for action! The fifth grade band has a total of 14 members.

“All of the sections are balanced quite equally,” said Mr. Gellerman. He has five

trumpets, two trombones, two baritones, and a tuba player for the brass section, and the

woodwinds section rounds out the band. The sixth grade has a total of 14 members in

their band. Mr. Gellerman is very excited about getting the grade school instrumental

music program started!

Christine Troshynski, a junior from St. Mary’s, is auditioning for the All-State

Band in Norfolk on Saturday. Christine plays the oboe and will audition at Norfolk High

School on the south side near the Johnny Carson Theater. Her audition is at nine o’clock

in the morning.

St. Mary’s will not produce an all-school musical this year. In place of the

musical, there will be a Madrigal play. The Madrigal play will feature Medieval costumes

and music and a few added Christmas carols. The Madrigal poduction is open to the

entire school; a meeting will be held at the end of the week to plan the Madrigal. The

time, date, and place are not yet decided; but listen for it and come join the fun!

Last Thursday, October 4, the junior high girls’ volleyball tam took on Atkinson. The

seventh grade lost in three sets with scores of 3-15, 15-6, and 7-15. The eighth grade team

also lost in three sets, 3-15, 17-15, and 7-15. Then on Monday, October 8, they took on

Elgin Pope John. The seventh graders lost in three sets with scores of 3-15, 15-10, and

3-15. The eighth grade fell as well with scores of 12-15, 15-9, and 8-15. The junior high

girls will compete in their last games for the season at the Pope John Invitational volleyball

tournament in Elgin on Saturday. Games start at 9 o’clock.

On Monday the St. mary’s junior high cardinal football squad traveled to Elgin to take on

the Pope John Crusarers for their last game of the season. The Cardinals again showed

dominance for the fourth game in a ow. The Cardinals came out on top of the Crusaders

leading the Cards to a perfect 4-0 season. Charles Shields and will Mahony each had two

touchdowns. Bobby Simons also had a score. The Cardinal defense was again relentless,

this time tacking on a safety. The junior high Cads showed an impressive season with lots

of talent and hard work.

Last Thursday, our spirit theme for the night’s games was

“Once We Pop, the Fun Don’t Stop.” We played POP music, said POPcorn balls

at our cheercession stand, and even gave out soda POP. Megan Davis had

most fizz in our activities so we honor her today with a Push POP. Thanks,

Megan, for all of your enthusiasm!

This week, our spirit theme is “Let Us Blow Your Mind.”

If the cheerleaders saw anyone showing extra spirit this week, they gave the

them a certificate that said “You’ve been caught Showing Spirit!” Anyone

who got one of those certificates will be able to redeem them for a prize at

the pep rally on Thursday. Also at the pep rally there will be a Bubble

Blowing Contest to tunes like “The Bomb’ and “Let Me Blow Your Mind”

with BLOW pops for prizes.

Last Thursday, October 4th at the Rangeland Cross Country Conference held in

Ainsworth at 4:30 p.m. Gina Hoesing placed 25th, Tyler Cole 45th, Dan Ascherl 3rd, and

Zach Ascherl 13th. The District Cross Country meet will be in Albion

tomorrow; the runners will be dismissed at 2:10 p.m.

Last Thursday the St. Mary’s Cardinals JV volleyball team hosted the Lynch Lady Eagles

in an exciting match in which they came out with a triumphant victory, 15-4, 15-2. The

next JV game will be this Thursday against the Butte wildcats. Their record is now 9-2.

The freshmen volleyball team also won against the Eagles, 15-13, 15-12. The

freshmen record is now 1-6.

St. Mary’s Cardinals’ varsity volleyball team also hosted the Lynch Eagles last Thursday

October 4th. They ended the night with a 15-13, 15-11 win. They also took part in the

Orchard Triangular Monday night. First SMH defeated the Stuart Broncos 15-2, 13-15,

15-10. Next, they played the Orchard Orioles but came out with a tough loss of 9-15,

7-15.

St. Mary’s Cardinals will host the Butte Wildcats tomorrow with games starting at

5:00 p.m. They will also take part in the St. Mary’s Triangular next Tuesday, October

16, with Orchard and Plainview. Games start at 6:30p.m.

Last Thursay, October 4, the Cardinal football team faced the Lynch Eagles.

The Cardinals scored early and often and went on to win 39-6. The Cardinals

gained 450 yards of total offense and held the Eagles to 155 yards. Ryan

Hickey ran well and gained 138 yards on eight carries with two touchdowns.

Mike Simons was three for five passing for 86 yards and one touchdown. Kiel

Neumann led the team with 13 tackles. The Cardinal football record is now 4-2.

Tomorrow the Cardinals will face the Butte Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. in O’Neill.
