KBRX News

October 3, 2001

Good afternoon! I am Lindsey Kallhoff. And I am Michael Jeffrey. And

we’re here this week with the St. Mary’s school news.

This morning the eighth grade class prepared our weekly high school

Mass. The Mass was planned by Sr. Anita and celebrated by Reverend Mark

Filips.

After Mass, Mr. Raymond Scott took pictures for students who are

applying for passports for the trip to Europe next spring. Then Van Allen from

Norfolk came out to take pictures of all of the fall sports and activity groups for

this year’s yearbook.

We ended the off-the-regular-schedule day with our monthly celebration of

Benediction at 3 o’clock.

In the fine arts department the first rehearsal for St. Mary’s 2001 one act

play,

Do Not Go Gentle, was held Monday at 7:00 a.m. The cast is Ashely Braun as

Lillian Barron, Shannon Holz as Joanna, Nick Nord as Windsor, Laura Cameron

as Kelly, Kathryn Fuscher as Mildred Flumac and Lyle Berryman as Nobody.

This year’s student director is Emily Dugan. Ms. Goettertz is the director and is

assisted by Mrs. Merri Schneider. Do Not Go Gentle was written by Suzan L.

Zeder. It is a Comedy/Drama. The tryouts were last Wednesday. The one act

group will be holding early morning practices for the next several weeks.

The teachers’ aides this year are Chris Havranek with kindergarten, Mary

Kersenbrock with the first grade, Staci Givens with the second grade, Sara Kelly

with the third grade, Michelle Shoemaker with the fifth grade, Chris Bahrij with the

sixth grade, and Brent Kelly, Joe Pongratz, and Ashley Braun in the high school.

Katie Cameron is the office assistant in the high school and Kristen Carr helps

out in the elementary school office.. Most of these people volunteer to TA, but

some aide the teachers for credit. The TA’s job is to help the teachers with

grading papers, making copies, and performing various other tasks. The

students’ TA times depend on whether they are working for credit or volunteering.

Tomorrow St. Mary’s will not be in session due to a teachers inservice that

will take place in Norfolk. Also on Monday, October 8, the students will have a

late start at 9:30 because of the regularly scheduled monthly teachers’ meeting

that morning.

In class news the seniors will be selling tickets for the drawing for three

tickets for the Nebraska versus Kansas football game in Lincoln on November 10.

The seats are the in the south end zone. Contact the seniors about the tickets.

They will sell them tomorrow at the volleyball and football games and at all the

remaining home football and volleyball games.

The seniors will be taking their class picture on Monday 8 at 8:00 a.m.

spot at the State tournament, which will be held on October 9th in Grand Island.

In junior high sports last Thursday the junior high girls’ volleyball teams

went to Orchard to take on the Orchard Orioles. The seventh grade girls went

three sets but came up short as they fell 9-15, 15-13, and 10-15. The eighth

graders also went three sets and also fell short of a victory. Scores for the eighth

grade games were 6-15, 15-10, and 8-15. The girls’ next game is tomorrow in

Atkinson at 6:00 p.m. They also travel to Elgin Pope John next Monday to play

the Crusaders at 3 o’clock!

The St. Mary’s junior high Cards’ football team again showed another

promising victory this week. On Monday the Cardinals traveled to Spencer to

take on the Spencer-Naper Pirates. The Cards dominated the whole game as

they have done all season, coming out with an impressive victory, 48-8. Coach

Tim Schneider said he was “really enjoying coaching the kids this year. They

have great attitudes, work hard in practice, and it shows in the games.” The

Cards are now 3-0. Their goal of the season was to end the season 4-0; they will

have a chance to accomplish that goal next Monday, October 8, against the

Pope John Crusaders in Elgin. The game starts at 4:30 p.m.

The freshmen volleyball team seems to be hanging in there but still have

not been able to come out on top. They only had one game this past week which

was against Orchard; they were defeated 7-15, 9-15. The freshmen are currently

0-6 for the season.

The junior varsity volleyball team had another very successful week in the

games they played. They first traveled to Orchard last Thursday to bring home a

victory, 15-4, 15-11. They then went to Springview on Friday and played Keya

Paha in a triumphant match, 15-2, 15-11. The JV record is currently 8-2.

St. Mary’s varsity volleyball team defeated the Keya Paha Indians last

Friday in two sets, 15-6, 15-8. The Cardinal varsity volleyball players will face

the Lynch Eagles tomorrow with games starting at 5:00 p.m. They will also take

part in the Orchard Triangular on Tuesday, October 9, starting at 5:30 p.m

On Monday night the St.Mary’s junior varsity football team traveled to

Spencer to take on the Spencer-Naper Pirates. The Cardinals came up on the

losing end of the game. The final score was 30-12. The two touchdowns in the

game were scored on a pass from Nick Welding to Kevin Ohri and a touchdown

run by Welding. The Cardinals’ junior varsity football team will travel to Butte

next Monday to take on the Butte Wildcats.

Last Friday the Cardinal varsity football team traveled to Springview to

take on the Keya Paha County Indians. The Cardinals dominated the football

game and won 46-0. The game ended in the third quarter because of the

45-point rule. The Cardinals gained 364 yards in total offense while holding the

Indians to just 67. Jed Givens ran for 102 yards with two touchdowns and had a

40-yard touchdown reception. Matt Willis had a 75-yard kickoff return for a

touchdown and a 39-yard touchdown reception. Mike Simons threw for 94 yards

with three touchdowns and also had 89 yards rushing. The Cardinals’ record is

now 3-2. Tomorrow the Cardinals will take on the Lynch Eagles. That game has

a 7:30 kickoff time.

That completes our news for this week from St. Mary’s High School. We

want to thank the sponsors of our Cardinal news this week.
