Kiel Neumann and Matt Willis
KBRX School News
September 12, 2001

Good afternoon. I am Kiel Neumann. And I am Matt Willis. Welcome
back to the halls of St. Mary’s High School. Our journalism class will bring you
the school news each Wednesday at 3 o’clock here on KBRX 102.9 FM.
In the aftermath of yesterday’s attack on America, we want to extend our
condolences to all of our listeners who have personally suffered because of the
attacks and offer our prayers for all who are suffering, for all who are helping the
victims, and for all of our nation’s leaders who will be making the decisions for our
country over the coming days and weeks.
Yes, Kiel, we’re off to a great beginning this fall semester here at St.
Mary’s. It’s already mid term of the first quarter. The classes and organizations
have been busy and have elected their class officers.
Seventh grade electees include Anthony Gallagher, president; Brady
Anderson, vice president; Jenna Connot, secretary/treasurer; and Sloane
Schneider, student council representative.
Eighth grade class, sponsored by Sister Anita, voted for Jese Reiman for
president. Vice president is Tim Shoemaker. Secretary is Patrick Conway and
the eighth grade representative is Elizabeth Willis.
Ninth graders elected Sara Novak, president; Brooke Lindhorst,
vice-president; Rachael Gray, secretary/treasurer; and Christina Reynoldson,
student council. Beat reporter Michael Jeffrey said this year’s ninth grade girls
have a lot of energy and the boys like to sit in the back of the classroom. He said
“they’re a fun bunch to talk to.”
The sophomore class had elections for their officers on the first day of
school. Their president is Nick Welding; vice president is Kevin Ohri;
secretary/treasurer is Ryan Kelly, and their student council representative is Tyler
Cole.
The junior officers are Jed Givens, president; Matt Willis, vice president;
Kiel Neumann, secretary; Adam Koenig, treasurer; and Mike Simons,
representative.
The class officers and sponsors for the seniors are Brent Kelly, president;
Aaron Troester, vice president; Chris Bahrij, secretary/treasurer; and Sara Kelly,
student council representative. Mrs. Atkeson and Mrs. Troshynski are their
sponsors.
Yes, Matt, and Mrs. Atkeson also serves as sponsor of the Student
Council. The 2001-2002 officers of the Student Council are President Mary
Kersenbrock, Vice President Ashley Braun, and Secretary-Treasurer Katie
Cameron. The class presidents and the class representatives serve on the
Student Council.
Another organization, the FBLA which stands for the Future Business
Leaders of America, held their first meeting on Friday, September 7. There are
currently 32 members in the FBLA. Only a president and secretary/treasurer
were elected. Mary Kersenbrock has the privilege of being the FBLA president
and Amanda Davis is the FBLA secretary/treasurer. Mr. Tony Allen is the group’s
sponsor.
In other groups this week, Ms. Goettertz said the try-outs for one-acts will
be held at the end of September. Also the juniors ministered the first all-school
Mass last Friday and the sophomores ministered the high School Mass this
morning. Sr. Anita plans the high school Masses.
In the grade school the kindergarten is looking forward to a great year.
There are 23 children in kindergarten this year. They have been making a cake
for Mary’s birthday which is September 8th. Mrs. Schneider’s third graders are
catching caterpillars and watching them spin cocoons. After they have observed
the stages of the caterpillar, they will release the butterflies. Mrs. Wettlaufer’s
fourth graders are doing interviews with the elderly. The subject of the interviews
is what the elderly did when they were in fourth grade. The interview consists of
questions about entertainment and what the eldely thought of being when they
grew up.
We want to take this time to welcome Clint Morrill to the St. Mary’s staff.
He will be taking over the custodian duties in the high school this year.
St. Mary’s students have been very active in all the sports since school
first began on August 24.
Dan Ascherl, Tyler Cole, Zach Ascherl, Kylie Ludemann, and Gina
Hoesing participate in the co-operative Cross Country program between St.
Mary’s and O’Neill High School. On Thursday, August 30, at Rock County junior
Dan Ascherl placed 13th, freshman Zach Ascherl placed 21st, and sophomore
Tyler Cole placed 27th. Kylie Ludemann placed 33rd. The next Cross Country
meet will be this Friday, September 14, at the O’Neill Invitational beginning at
4:30 p.m.
On August 24th the girls’ golf team traveled to Roack County for their first
meet. On August 30th they went to Albion and took first place. Molly Johnson
from OHS placed first. Kareena Nichols from St. Mary’s High School placed third.
Last Thursday, the girls went to Pierce and again took first place. Then on
Monday, they participated in the O’Neill Invitational and placed third.
The junior high volleyball team competed in a tournament in Stuart last
Saturday. The seventh grade lost both games to O’Neill and Orchard both in two
sets with scores of 8-15 and 12-15 to O’Neill and 7-15 and 4-15 to Orchard. The
eighth grade also played O’Neill and Orchard. Against O’Neill the Lady Cards lost
in two sets with scors of 8-15 and 4-15. Against Orchard they had a little better
success but still came out without a win. Scores to that game were 15-5, 9-15,
and 12-15. Coach Goettertz said that the eighth graders should be a very
competitive team this year, and that the seventh grade girls’ skills are coming
along very well.
St Mary’s junior high boys began their 2001 football season on August 20.
This seems to be a promising year according to Coach Tim Schneider. Numbers
are up with 20 players in all -- ten seventh graders and ten eighth graders. The
first weeks of practice have been spent in conditioning and going over offensive
plays. They would like to improve last year’s record of 0-4 by turning it around to
4-0. This year Coach Schneider brings to the program a new assistant coach,
Mr. John Schindler. He joins Mr. Chris Slack who returns for his third year with
the junior Cards. The junior Cardinals take on Niobrara as their first opponent on
September 17. The players and coaches are very enthusiastic and looking
forward to a successful 2001 season. So make plans on coming out to support
the junior high football team on Monday here in O’Neill at 4 o’clock.
St. Mary’s Lady Cardinal volleyball team started their season off against
Spencer-Naper Pirates on August 31st. The Lady Cards fell in two sets 3-15 and

September 4th. Clearwater took the win in two sets against SMH 16-18 and
1-15. St. Mary’s got their first victory of the sason against Spalding/Spalding
Academy 15-5, 15-2. Their next win quickly followed when they played the Stuart
Broncos last Friday at home. Although Stuart won the first set 14-16, the Lady
Cardinals came back to win the second and third sets 15-9, 15-6. The Cardinal
record is now 2-2.
In Junior Varsity volleyball action the Lady Cardinals won the Clearwater
Quadrangular defeating Clearwater in two sets, 15-10, 15-5, and
Spalding-Spalding Academy in the championship game with a 15-7, 15-3 win.
The team had a two-day break until they hosted Stuart last Friday. The junior
varsity volleyball team won over Stuart 15-7, 17-8. Last night St. Mary’s hosted
the O’Neill High School junior varsity volleyball game. They suffered a loss. The
junior varsity record now stands at three wins and two losses.
The freshmen have also been busy. They had a rough start with three
defeats. They lost to Spencer-Naper 10-15, 6-15; to Stuart 11-15, 0-15, and to
OHS last night.
The Lady Cardinals will meet up with Sandhills-Dunning this Friday,
September 14th, with the B team starting at 5:00 p.m. The C-team game was
cancelled because of the distance. Dunning is 59 miles south west of Ainsworth.
On August 31st the St. Mary’s varsity football team opened their season
against a tough Spencer-Naper team who is ranked in the top ten in the State. In
a tough fought battle the Cardinals came up on the losing end with a score of
42-20. Mike Simons led the team in passing completing seven out of 18 passes
for 77 yards and one touchdown. Ryan Kelly had three catches for 38 yards and
one touchdown receiving. Jed Givens ran for 41 yards on 12 carries with one
touchdown. Mike Simons also led the team in tackles with ten.
Last Friday, September 7, the Cardinals took on a very quick Stuart team.
The game was a see-saw battle throughout. The Cardinals scored with two
minutes left in the game to go ahead 24-20. Then they had a tough defensive
stand to end the game. Mike Simons was 6 for 10 passing for 105 yards and one
touvhdown. Ryan Hickey ran for 102 yards. Dan Haggerty had 50 yards on two
catches. Joe Pongratz led the team in tackles with nine.
Friday the Cardinals will travel to Dunning to take on a tough Sandhills
