Good afternoon. I am Shannon Holz along with Kayla Ryan bringing you the last broadcast of St. Mary’s High School Cardinal school news for the 2000-2001 school term.

First congratulations to Mary Kersenbrock, our newly elected Student Council President for next year, along with Katie Cameron the new vice preseident, and Ashley Braun, the 2001-2002 Student Council Secretary-Treasurer.

During this past week we’ve had several things happen in the area of academics. Thursday was the High School Awards Night. Students were awarded their letters for extracurricular and co-curricular activities. And awards were presented to students for the highest GPA in the classes along with other special academic awards.

Principal Jim Troshynski presented SMH “M” Academic Letter Awards to students with a GPA of 3.25 or higher to junior Chris Bahrij, Mary Kersenbrock, Aaron Troester, Shannon Holz, Ashley Braun, Brent Kelly, Katie Cameron, Stacey Zakrzewski, Sara Kelly, and Kayla Ryan and to sophomores Christine Troshynski, Matt Willis, Michelle Shoemaker, Brooke Earley, Kareena Nichols, Kristen Carr, Dan Haggerty, Adam Koenig, and Kiel Neumann.

Niobrara Academic All-Conference Award winners, junior students who maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, were Chris Bahrij, Ashley Braun, Shannon Holz, Brent Kelly, Mary Kersenbrock, and Aaron Troester.

Mrs. Retha Marx, St. Patrick’s Parish coordinator, and Pastor Mark Filips presented the St. Mary’s Scholarships. Among the 28 scholarships awarded, the overall scholarship recipients went to Junior Mary Kersenbrock in memory of Claire Hickey donated by Lucille Dufek, Sophomore Christine Troshynski in memory of the Babbit and Mahony Family donated by Mike Mahony, and Freshman Gina Hoesing in memory of Jim and Lucille Ruther donated by the Dougherty Grandchildren.

The 3rd Annual Lauren Schaaf Scholarship donated by the SMH Class of 1969 went to Stacey Zakrzewski for the Most Improved 11th Grade Anatomy Student and to Adam Koenig for the Most Improved 10th Grade Biology Student. The 1st Annual Vera Pongratz Memorial Scholarship donated by Morris Pongratz went to Jessica Timmerman and Dan Ascherl based on living in the country and being a non-smoker.

Additional scholarships are being awarded to grades six, seven and eight this afternoon at the Junior High School Honors Ceremony which began at 2:30 in the high school gym.

Also in the area of academics the students have been registering for 2001-2002 classes this week. Registration forms were to have been filled out and signed by our parents and turned in to Mrs. Atkeson or the main office.

The sixth grade orientation was held this morning from 8:30 until 10:30. We look forward to the new group of seventh graders next year!

In sports this past week the O’Neill Eagle golf team competed in the District Golf Meet at the Columbus Elks. Jesse Peetz was an alternate on the team.

St. Mary’s boys and girls both swept the District Competition here in O’Neill last Wednesday as they claimed Championship trophies with 119.5 and ___ points respectively. Heading to the State competition this Friday and Saturday at Burke High School in Omaha are seven young men and two young women from SMH. The Cardinal 4 x 800 meter relay team of Aaron Troester, Dan Haggerty, Jake Peetz, and Bill Troshynski will run at 3:30 in the afternoon on Friday. The SMH boys 4 x 400 meter relay team of Matt Willis, Dan Haggerty, Jake Peetz, and Bill Troshynski will compete in the last running event on Saturday at Omaha Burke. Individual Cardinal competitors will compete throughout the evening on Friday and during the day on Saturday. Those athletes include Dan Haggerty in the pole vault; Chris Bahrij in the high jump, discus, 100 meter hurdles, and 300 meter hurdles; Dan Asherl in the 3200 meter run, and Bill Troshynski in the 400 meter run and the 800 meter run.

For the girls Mary Kersenbrock will compete in the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter dash, the 400 meter dash, and the triple jump; and Kara Garman will compete in the 100 meter hurdles and the long jump. All of these athletes are very competitive with their times and distances so plan on a trip to Omaha to cheer them on as they represent O’Neill St. Mary’s athletes! You’ll also get to see some of the finest athletes in the State of Nebraska! Check your website at nsaahome.org for the schedule and remember to bring your sunscreen! Coach Allen and Coach Laursen said “Bring your umbrellas!”

Scott and Nicole on KBRX this morning shared the results of a poll that indicated most people felt the happiest on the last day of school. That will be tomorrow for our elementary students and Friday for our high school students.

The elementary students and junior high and high school band and choir gave us that same message at their spring music program last night in the Cardinal gym. They entertained everyone as they sang through their memories of summertime songs and good wishes. We share their wishes to “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” as we “Sing in the Sunshine” and “I Need a Vacation” with their wish “May Your Roads be Straight and Narrow” and a suggestion that “Everybody Ought to Smile” as we say thank you to all of our listeners and sponsors for tuning in to our broadcast this year. We want to especially thank Sun Mart and Clothing Company for sponsoring us today.

I am Shannon Holz. And I am Kayla Ryan. Thanks for your time. Goodbye for now. And remember to join us again next fall for more news from St. Mary’s High School.
