Good afternoon. I am Brent Kelly and I am Monica Marx with this afternoon’s news from St. Mary’s High School.

We’ve had a busy week with all of the extra-curricular and co-curricular activities
this past week. Last Wednesday several SMH students competed in the Niobrara Valley
Conference Industrial Tech Day at the armory. Chris Bahrij placed 2nd in Airplane Hang
Time. Aaron Troester placed 1st in Tower construction for the third consecutive year.
Bahrij placed fifth in that same event.
Then on Thursday St. Mary’s High School classes were not in session because of
the SMH Invitational Track Meet. Teachers, students and volunteers worked at the meet.
The girls brought home the runner-up trophy behind the Wheeler Central girls. The
Cardinal boys claimed the Championship title for the day.
On Friday Ainsworth hosted the District Music Contest. Congratulations goes out
to the competitors. The choir consisting of Christine Troshynski, Kara Garman, Jessica
Timmerman, Sara Kelly, Stacey Zakrzewski, Amanda Davis, Kristen Carr, Megan Davis,
Falycia Wagenaar, Sarah Novak, Gina Hoesing, Brooke Earley, Staci Givens, Christina
Reynoldson, and Rachael Gray received a 2, which is an Excellent rating. Christine
Troshynski received a 2 on her oboe solo and Liz Ascherl received a 1 on her vocal solo.
St. Mary’s Junior-Senior Prom was held on Saturday beginning with Mass at 5
o’clock and a banquet in the Parish Hall at seven. Royalty crowned at the Prom Dance
were King Rod Preusker, son of Barb Preusker and Mike Preusker and Queen Jessie
Dougherty, daughter of Pat and Nickie Dougherty. Attendants were Tyson Cole, son of
Nola Cole and Jack Cole, and Monica Marx, daughter of Lawrence and Retha Marx.
Crown bearer were Austin Holz, son of Russ and Joanie Holz, and Hannah Janousek,
daughter of Joe and Celia Janousek. Congratulations to all of the Prom royalty! Also
thanks goes out to all of the parents who worked at post prom and all those who donated
prizes and scholarships.
Also congratulations to Larry Caouette and Ryan Kelly on making the Runza
All-Star Basketball team which will travel to Lincoln for games on May 26th through May
28th.
In Junior High Track at the NVC meet on Saturday placing for the girls were the 4
X 800 meter relay (4th); Jacque Earley (3rd) in the 100 meter hurdles and second in the
300 meter hurdles; Liz Willis (5th) and Anne Kersenbrock (6th) in the long junp; and
Sarah Novak (3rd) in the 1600 meter run. Placing for the boys was Zach Ascherl (1st) in
the 1600 meter run and third in the 200 meter run; Jesse Reiman (4th) and Ray
Timmerman (5th) in the 100 meter hurdles; Charles Shields (4th) in the long jump; and
Curt Mahony (5th) in the Shot Put. Tomorrow the Junior High will travel to Ord for an
Invitational Track Meet that starts at 3:00 p.m. Their bus will leave school at 12:30.
Also in Track News the High School Girls placed second at the Butte Invitational
here at O’Neill Yesterday. Orchard took first place in the girls’ division. The Cardinal
Boys once again claimed the championship. Several of the high school track team
members have been invited to compete in the annual Norfolk Classic Track Meet at
Norfolk High School tomorrow. Bill Troshynski will run in the 400 and 800 meter races;
Dan Haggerty will compete in the pole vault, and Chris Bahrij will compete in the discus,
the 300 meter hurdles, and the high jump. Mary Kersenbrock will run in the 100, 200, and
400 and compete in the triple jump; and Kara Garman will compete in the 100 meter
hurdles and the long jump. The Norfolk Classic meet starts at 4:45 p.m. The bus for the
competitors will leave school at 2:30. Other meets this week for the track team include
the Niobrara Valley Track meet scheduled for this Saturday here in O’Neill. It will be
hosted by Butte. Then on Tuesday the team will compete in the Spencer Track Meet
followed by the District Track Meet here in O’Neill here Wednesday, May 9th! Good
luck everyone in all of your events!
National Honor Society Induction will be held this Friday morning following the 8
o’clock high school Mass. Also on Friday the art students will travel to Bartlett for the
Niobrara Valley Conference Art Show. The ESU 8 Art Show will then be held on
Monday.
An addition to the schedule is the special awards night set for seniors on Monday,
April 30th at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall.
This week is National Volunteer Week. The grade school would like to thank all
the parents who volunteer to supervise noon recess. These volunteers include Nancy
Campbell, Joe and Carol Fuhrer, Lawrence and Jane Reiman, Cathy Ascherl, and Tom and
Shelley Lindhorst.
Scoliosis checking began today. The sixth grade field trip will be this Friday.
They are going to Sioux City. The fourth graders will also have their fun day on Friday.
The fifth graders travel to Hastings next Tuesday, May 1st for their field trip. And next
week will be a “Buy-one-get-one-free book fair.”
Congratulations goes out to Nickie Ludemann and Terra Simons, who were
offered Canfield Scholarships from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. This
scholarship offers full-time UNL students a one-year award of $1,000.
And let’s not forget to send out a special thank you to our secretaries Judy Crumly
at St. Mary’s High School and Janice Friedel at St. Mary’s Elementary School on this,
National Secretary’s Day. We also want to thank all of the students who serve as
secretaries for their classes and organizations for all of their work throughout the year!
And remember that next Tuesday we have a 9:30 a.m. late start because of the
regularly scheduled teachers’ meetings. The May Calendar is being sent home this week
so make sure you check it for all of the end-of-the-year activities!
