Good afternoon. I am Mary Kersenbrock along with Shannon Holz with this week's
segment of St. Mary's School news.
We welcome everyone back to school after the much
appreciated Easter break. The
O'Neill Invitational Track meet had been postponed from last Thursday because of the weather
until yesterday. Both the high school and the junior high school track teams competed in
yesterday's meet.
Congratulations goes out to boy the guys and the girls who took Runner-up honors in
Division 2. The boys scored 119 points behind Clearwater's 120 and the girls scored 104 points
behind Wheeler Central's 118. Bill Troshynski brought home four golds for the guys and Mary
Kersenbrock brought home four gold medals for the girls yesterday. Mary also set a new meet
record in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1.01.17.
Medalists for the Cardinal girls included:
100 meter Dash: 1st Mary Kersenbrock in 12.89 and 2nd Laura Cameron in 14.01.
400 meter Dash: 1st Mary Kersenbrock in 1.01.17 and 4th Christine Troshynski in 1.07.6.
300 meter intermediate hurdles: 4th Laura Cameron in 54.49.
Long Jump: 1st Kara Garman with a jump of 15 feet 3 and 1/2 inches
and 6th Emily Walnofer with a jump of 13 feet 4 inches.
200 meter dash: 1st Mary Kersenbrock in 26.24 and 3rd Kara Garman in 27.45.
100 meter high hurdles 2nd Kara Garman in 17.14. and 3rd Marian Carr in 18.02.
800 meter run 6th Christine Troshynski in 2.50
Triple Jump 1st Mary Kersenbrock with a jump of 34 feet
and 6th Mary Crumly with a jump of 29 feet 3 and 1/4 inches.
The girls freshman relay team placed fourth in 1.04.28.
The 4 X 100 meter relay team of Kara Garman, Lindsey Kallhoff, Brooke Earley,
and Laura Cameron took first place in 55.53.
The 4 X 400 meter relay team placed 6th in 4:54.54
and the 4 X 800 meter relay team placed fourth in 12.51.21.
Medalists for the Cardinal boys included:
400 meter dash: 1st Bill Troshynski in 52.23 and 5th Aaron Troester in 55.85.
300 meter intermediate hurdles: 1st Chris Bahrij in 43.17,
2nd Jake Peetz in 43.20, and 6th Aaron Jeffrey in 47.41.
1600 meter run: 5th Aaron Troester in 5.00.69.
100 meter high hurdles: 1st Chris Bahrij in 15.97, 4th Jake Peetz in 17.40,
and 5th Aaron Jeffrey in 18.13.
800 meter run: 1st Bill Troshynski.
3200 meter run: 6th Nick Welding in 11.44.72.
Triple Jump: 3rd Matt Willis with a jump of 38 feet and 6 and 1/2 inches and
4th Kiel Neumann with a jump of 37 feet 11 and 1/2 inches.
High Jump: in a tie for 3rd place was Chris Bahrij with a jump of 5 feet 10 inches.
Discus: 1st Chris Bahrij with a throw of 137 feet 7 and 1/4 inches.
The boys freshman relay team of Ryan Kelley, Tyler Cole, Nick Welding, and Aaron
Jeffrey took first in 52.18.
The 4 X 100 meter relay team placed 3rd in 47.63.
The 4 X 400 meter relay team of Matt Willis, Dan Haggerty, Jake Peetz and Bill
Troshynski took a gold medal for first place in 3.38.92.
The 4 X 800 meter relay team of Dan Haggerty, Dan Ascherl, Aaron Troester, and
Troshynski took first in 8.52.18.
The junior high girls placed 9th yesterday with 28 points and the junior high boys placed 11th with 18 points.
St. Mary's hosts her own Invitational Track meet tomorrow, Thursday, April 19th. Field events begin at 9 o'clock and the running events are scheduled to begin at one o'clock. With temperatures forecast to be in the 70s, it will be a great day for you to come out and support the Cardinal track teams!
In other sporting events this week the golfers will compete in the O'Neill Invitational Golf meet tomorrow (Thursday) beginning at 9 a.m. The golf teams also travel to Neligh on Saturday for an invitational. Tee-off time is at 8:30 a.m.. The bus leaves O'Neill at 6:30.
Also on Saturday the Niobrara Valley Conference junior high school track meet will be held here in O'Neill. Starting time is at 10:00 a.m.
The District Music contest will be held on Friday, April 20th in Ainsworth. St. Mary's competitors will begin with Christine Troshynski performing an oboe solo at 1:30 p.m. The Mixed Chorus Ensemble performs at 2:18 and the Girls Ensemble performs at 2:45. Liz Ascherl will complete the day with a vocal solo at 3:48. The contest is open to the public. Make the trip to Ainsworth if you can. It will be a day filled with good performances. Good luck to all the competitors.
Two special youth oriented masses will be celebrated this weekend. The annual Prom Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 21st at 5:00 p.m. Father Lydel Lape will celebrate. The following day, Sunday, will be First Communion for the second graders in our parish. This First Communion Mass will be celebrated at 1 o'clock.
St. Mary's Junior-Senior Prom will also be held this Saturday. The evening begins with the special mass at five o'clock for the juniors and seniors and their dates. Dinner follows at 7 o'clock in the parish hall with coronation of the royalty at 8:30 in the gym. Royalty candidates are Monica Marx, Kelli Reynoldson, Mary Crumly, Jessie Dougherty, Abby Welding, Rod Preusker, Tyson Cole, Joe Jeffrey, Kyle Peterson, and Dan Pribil. The coronation will be followed by the prom dance. Post Prom activities will be held at the O'Neill Elementary School from midnight until four a.m. Have a fun and safe evening!
On Monday twenty-seven SMH students will travel to Northeast Community College in Norfolk for the Northeast Scholastic Contest. Mrs. Paula Atkeson is their sponsor.
And in elementary school news this week the fourth graders trekked to Grand Island this morning to visit the Stuhr Museum. The grade school would like to acknowledge the National Volunteer Week by thanking everyone who donates their time to benefit our school. Thanks to all St. Mary's School volunteers.
