Good afternoon, this is Kayla Ryan and Katie Cameron with this segment of post-spring break news.

The SMH track team started practice on Monday, March 5. The girls team will be
coached by Mrs. Quana Laursen. The boys will be coached by Mr. Tony Allen. This first
week will consist mainly of handing out sweats and conditioning. The first meet will be
the Spencer-Naper Early Bird on March 24.
This year’s O’Neill Golf Team had a meeting at OHS on March 5th to discuss and
distribute the handbook and view a video. The team’s members from St. Mary’s are
Steven Binkerd, Tom Fletcher, Chris Havranek, Tyson Chohon, Nathan Eby, and Jesse
Peetz. Varsity golf meets are usually held on weekdays and the Junior Varsity meets will
be on the weekends. The first golf meet is set for Thursday, March 29th at 2:30 in
O’Neill.
Four SMH students qualified for the State speech competition on Monday, March
fifth at the 2001 District D-1 Speech Contest. District Champions and State qualifiers
were Katie Cameron in Poetry, Britt Chohon in Informative Speaking and Britt Chohon
and Mary Crumly in Duet Acting. District medalist Ashley Braun placed third in
Humorous Prose. The team placed fourth out of eight teams. State Speech will be held
Friday, March 16 at the University of Kearney campus. Good luck, girls! Capture the
gold!
We would like to congratulate the Chambers Lady Coyotes for capturing the D2
State Runner-up Basketball Title last Saturday. We would also like to wish the
Spencer-Naper Pirates and the Ewing Tigers good luck as they compete in the Boys State
Basketball tourney.
St. Mary’s band is preparing for their upcoming clinic to be held in Butte. This
Niobrara Valley Conference West band clinic is to be held Tuesday, March 20. The
Honor Band will be conducted by Mr. Dennis Carlson. The rest of the conference band
will be led by Mr. Dick Davis. The clinic will conclude with a concert at 7:00 p.m.
Perpetual Adoration has begun. Please start your weekly visits to Jesus in the
Eucharist. Remember to sign in during each visit.
Anne Willis is the senior highlighted for this week. She is 18-years old and has
attended St. Mary’s for 13 years. Anne is the daughter of Keith and Carole Willis of
O’Neill. She participated in volleyball, cheerleading, FBLA, FTA, and one-acts earlier this
year. Now she is involved in track and the school musical in her spare time. She is also
the President of the Student Council and the President of FBLA. After graduation Anne
plans to major in elementary education but is undecided in which college she would like to
attend.
The end of the third quarter will be this Friday. Report cards will go home a week
from then.
A Home and School meeting will be held tonight at 8:00 p.m. in the grade school.
St. Mary’s students can look forward to a late start on Tuesday, March 13th, due
to a teachers’ meeting.
The FBLA students will be leaving on Wednesday March 14 at 6:30 a.m. for a trip
to Lincoln.
