Good afternoon. This is Brent Kelly and Monica Marx with this week’s segment
of St. Mary’s School News.
Last Friday the JV boys’ basketball team played their last game of the season at
Pope John. After three quarters of regulation play, the Cardinals were tied with the
Crusaders and ended up winning in overtime with a score of 46 to 45. The varsity boys’
basketball team took on Elgin Pope John and came out with a win. The final score was
60 to 46. The boys also began their first game in the boys’ sub-districts Monday night.
They played the Stuart Broncos and came out short with a score of 53 to 42. The boys
finished their season with a 14 and 8 record. Great job, guys!
On February 15, the St. Mary’s varsity girls’ basketball team did something that
no other girls’ team has done in four years; they made it to district finals. The Cardinals
pulled past the Spencer/Naper Pirates; the score was 47-41. The squad will now face
Coleridge in Plainview at 7:00 on Friday, the 23rd.
The junior varsity girls’ crew has ended their season and their final record was
4-6. Kara Garman said, “We had good athletes, good coaching, dedication, and everyone
gave 100%.” The season was a fun one and they can’t wait until next year.
The wrestling season came to a close after the State tournament in Lincoln this
weekend. Tyler Cole and Tyson Cole were the two wrestlers from SMH that made it to
State and both went 0 and 2. Tyler closed his season with a 23 and 15 record, while
Tyson finished with a 21 and 14 record.
Last Saturday, February seventeenth, the speechers attended the Battle Creek
Invitational. Congratulations go out to the Novice Oral Interpretation of Drama team for
winning the sixth place medal - Kathryn Fuchser, Kylie Ludemann, Laura Cameron,
Emily Dugan and Jordon Anderson. Ludemann also finished fifth in Oral Interpretation
of Poetry and Dugan received fourth in Humorous Prose.
This Saturday, the 24th, is the Pope John Invite held in Elgin. It will be the last
meet the speech team attends before the conference and district meet. Ashley Braun
stated, “This is one of our favorite meets. SMH has been quite successful in the past few
years at Pope John.” The Cardinal speech team would like to invite you to come and
watch them this weekend.
The list is out! The cast for St. Mary’s musical Calamity Jane was posted last
Thursday. Calamity Jane takes us back to 1876 in the small town of Deadwood City
within the Dakota Territory centered around the life of Calamity Jane. The play is an
exciting blend of comedy, love, and friendship. Practice began on Monday and will
continue until early April. Plan to come to the performance scheduled for April 6th and
7th. You’ll be “goshamighty” glad you did.
Congratulations to the Sweetheart King Bill Troshynski and Queen Anne Willis
who were crowned at the annual Sweetheart Dance sponsored by the SMH Student
Council Saturday night. Also congratulations to the Sweetheart attendants - seniors Rod
Preusker and Jessie Dougherty, juniors Mary Kersenbrock and Steven Binkerd,
sophomores Brooke Early and Jed Givens and freshmen Kara Garman and Kevin Ohri.
Spring Break for SMH students starts next week after school on Wednesday
February 28th. Students will have Thursday, March 1st and Friday March 2nd off from
school and then return for regular classes on Monday, March 5th and the beginning of the
last week of the 3rd quarter.
Next Wednesday will mark Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, for Christians.
Lent is a time for us to truly reflect upon our lives and spirituality and deepen our faith in
God. St. Mary’s will begin this special time by celebrating an all-school Mass.
Mrs. Heibner’s Spanish II students visited the elementary classrooms today to
teach a little lesson on Spanish.
The parents of juniors and seniors at St. Mary’s are required to attend the Post
Prom Meeting tonight at 7:00 pm. The meeting will take place in the library at the
O’Neill Public High School.
Juniors and seniors will serve the annual Development Dinner at the KC Hall this
Sunday, February 25th. Servers are reminded to be at the Hall by 5:30.
The senior spotlighted this week is Megan Waterman. Megan is 17 years old and
has attended St. Mary’s for 13 years. She is the daughter of August and Barb Waterman
of O’Neill. Megan’s favorite activity to be involved in is basketball. She is also planning
to participate in track this spring. Megan is a member of National Honor Society and
FBLA. After graduation she hopes to attend either Midland Luther College in Fremont or
Briar Cliff College in Sioux City. Megan is not quite sure what she wants to major in yet.
