And what is up? I am Brent Kelly, and I am Ashley Braun, bringing you

this week’s edition of the St. Mary’s school news.

On Thursday, February first St. Mary’s boys Varsity basketball took on

Stuart in the NVC games that were held in Springview. St. Mary’s won with a

score of 66 to 46. They then went on to play Spencer-Naper on Friday. The St.

Mary’s boys were defeated with a final score of 45 to 61. Then on Saturday the

consolation and championship games between the NVC east and west teams

were held at the O’Neill Public High School and St. Mary’s faced Ewing for the

consolation games. St. Mary’s was defeated with a score of 53 to 70. The Varsity

boys also played Butte for the season’s parents’ night. The JV boys won 51-20.

The varsity won with a score of 85-60. They will travel to Chambers on Friday

the 9th with games beginning at 5:00. The bus will leave at 3:45.

 

The Lady Cardinals also competed in the Niobrara Valley Conference on

January 29 and February 1. On the first they went up against the Lynch Eagles.

The Cards proceeded to win by fifteen; the final score was 45-30. Then the

Cardinals took on Butte. The Lady Cards came out strong but came up a little

short. The final score was 51-56. Next the squad played Butte for their regular

season game. The Junior Varsity Girls lost with a score of 24-38. The Varsity

Girls lost with a score of 38-50.

 

They will also meet up with Chambers on February 9, at 5:00 at Chambers.

The night begins with JV Girls, Varisty Girls and Varsity Boys. The District

competition begins on the 12th. The top seated Lady Cardinals will start the

games at 6:30 versus Rock County at the O’Neill High School Gymnasium.

The St. Mary’s wrestlers have competed in two events, the Conference

meet in O’Neill and the Crusader Invitational in Grand Island. At the conference

meet Tyler Cole took first place, Tim Krugman took second place, Dan Ascherl

took second place, Tyson Cole took third place, and Mark Mahony won one and

lost two matches.

At the Crusader Invitational, Tim Krugman won once and lost twice, and

has a record of 9 and 14. Tyler Cole finished fourth and has a 21 and 12 record.

Dan Ascherl and Tyson Cole were injured, and Mark Mahony lost twice, and has

a record of 5 and 4. The district meet will be held this Friday and Saturday,

February ninth and tenth in Central City.

Holly Sukup is the senior spotlighted for this week. She is 17-years old

and has attended St. Mary’s for 12 years. She is the daughter of Roger and

Nancy Sukup of O’Neill. Holly participated in FTA, FBLA, and One-Acts. Later

this year she will participate in the Musical. Earlier this year Holly held the

office of One-Acts Assistant Director. After graduation she plans to attend either

Creighton University, University of South Dakota in Vermillion, University of

Nebraska in Lincoln, or the University of Wyoming in Laramie, WY. Holly

hopes to major in pre-med.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Hixson-Lied College of Fine and

Performing Arts has announced Ashley Braun as one of the winners for the

fourth annual Nebraska Young Artist Awards. On April 11th the organization

will recognize students who are gifted and talented in the areas of visual art,

dance, music, and theater. Chosen winners will take tours of the art facilities,

attend classes, meet faculty and college students and have lunch.

The day will conclude with an awards ceremony in the Nebraska Union

auditorium at 3:30 p.m. Congratulations Ashley!!!

 

On Saturday January 27, the SMH speech team traveled to Petersburg

with 9 of the 21 member team competing. Varsity medalists were Ashley Braun

who placed second in Oral Interpretation of Humorous Prose, second in

Entertainment Speaking, and third place in Oral Interpretation of Serious Prose;

Britt Chohon was the Informative Speaking champion; and Katie Cameron

placed second in Oral Interpretation of Poetry. Novice (first year) medalists

were Jordon Anderson, Laura Cameron, Emily Dugan, Kathryn Fuchser and

Kylie Ludemann who placed third in Oral Interpretation of Drama. Laura

Cameron placed third and Kathryn Fuchser received fourth in Oral

Interpretation of Humorous Prose.

 

 

The SMH speech team attended the Stuart Speech Invite on February

third. Ashley Braun was named Entertainment Speaking champion and placed

third in Oral Interpretation of Serious Prose, and fourth in Oral Interpretation of

Humorous Prose. Britt Chohon placed third in Informative Speaking, and the

team of Chohon and Mary Crumly placed fourth in Duet Acting. Emily Dugan

received superior ribbons in both Oral Interpretation of Humorous Prose and

Serious Prose. Kylie Ludemann earned a superior ribbon in Oral Interpretation

of Poetry. The Cardinal speech team is now preparing for the Battle Creek

Invitational meet which will be held Saturday, February seventeenth. Good luck

to all competitors.

Tuesday evening, February 6th, was Parent’s Night and the St. Mary’s

Drill Team had been hard at work learning a new dance which was

choreographed by one of the senior captains, Nickie Ludemann. The drill team

provided entertainment during the half time of the varsity boys’ basketball

game.

St. Mary’s Grade School’s annual magazine sale is in full swing. Last year,

magazine sales earned our school almost $3,000. If anyone would like a new

subscription, or would like to renew one they already have, please contact any

grade school student.

The grade school would like to thank the ladies of the parish who baked

cookies for our social last Friday for Catholic Schools Week. They would also

like to thank Home and School for paying for their bowling and for Pepsi for

donating the pop. The students appreciate it very much!

The Kraft Korner quilting ladies are raffling a quilt on St. Patrick’s Day.

Raffle tickers are available at the grade school office, or from any quilting lady.

Tickets are $1.00 per chance, or six chances for $5.00.

St. Mary’s second graders will have their rite of enrollment for their first

communion on Sunday, February 11 at the 11:00 mass.

Last week was Catholic schools week. In celebration of the week we had

many activities. However, due to the two snow days on Monday afternoon and

on Tuesday and Wednesday, we missed out on some of the activities. On

Monday, we got into groups ranging from grades 7 through 12. Points were

awarded for the activities and receiving first place in the competitions was Sr.

Anita’s group, The Leaven Loafers with 489 points. They will get a pizza party

and be awarded privilege coupons.

 

Paula’s Angels came in second with 465 points and the Clover placed third with

432 points. Second and third places will receive privilege coupons.

 

Tuesday there was a late start for students and meetings for the teachers.

Last night was parents’ night for winter sports with basketball games against

Butte. The drill team performed during half-time of the boys’ varsity game and

the Cheerleaders hosted an ice cream social after the events.

 

Yearbooks are still on sale if anyone would like to purchase one. The cost

is 30.00 and 34.00 if you want it personalized.

 

Today is the last day to order sports pictures.
