Good Afternoon! This is Kayla Ryan and Shannon Holz bringing you this week’s rundown of St. Mary’s school news.

So, Shannon what’s happening at the school this week?

Well, yesterday the students had a 9:30 late start due to a teacher’s meeting.

The prize a day calendars are still for sale. If you would like one you can contact the high school office to purchase one.

Orders for sports pictures are being sold at St. Mary’s highschool. Football, volleyball, cheerleading, and drill team photos are all available. The pictures were displayed at the basketball games on Saturday night and will continue to be displayed during school hours. Order forms can be picked up from the front office, at home games, or from Mrs. Troshynski and the senior journalism staff members.

Also the juniors are selling the Shamrock Cards in conjunction with the St. Mary’s Home and School Association. The Shamrock cards are $10.00 each and are sponsored by local businesses.

The St. Mary’s senior spotlighted this week is Rod Preusker. Rod is 18-years-old and has attended St. Mary’s for three and a half years. He is the son of Mike Preusker of O’Neill and Barb Preusker of Atkinson. Earlier this year he participated in football, mock trial, and FBLA. In the spring he will take part in track, but his favorite activity of all is football. Rod is also the senior class vice-president. After graduation he plans to attend the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Southeast Community College, or Wayne State College and is undecided on what he will major in.

This semester, we are going to include the elementary kids in school news. The Kindergartners are happy to have a new girl in their class. Makayla Wiese joined the five girls and eleven boys in the kindergarten class on Wednesday. She helped to close the gender gap, but they are still hoping for more girl students.

The second graders planned the Mass for the elementary school this morning. The high school will hold their Mass this Friday, January 12th. Please feel welcome to attend.

"May I have my time, please?" Ah, yes. The crazed speech season has begun! Students have started to search for scripts, write speeches and intros, and sign up for practices with Mrs. Harley. The first contest for novice and varsity will be held in Albion on Saturday, January 20th.

The Junior High boys’ basketball team went against the Ewing Tigers on January 8th. Even though their first game was a loss of 69 to 14 the Cardinals hope to come out on top in their next game.

The Drill Team has been doing some hard work in preparing for their upcoming performance. During the half time of the varsity boys’ game this Thursday, January 11th, the dancers will reveal a new routine for entertainment during the exciting basket ball season. Come out and support the drill team!

The St. Mary’s students that are a part of the O’Neill High School wrestling team participated in the David City Aquinas Invitational on Saturday, January 6. Tyler Cole placed second, and has a current record of 6 and 4; Dan Ascherl placed second and has a current record of 9 and 3. Tim Krugman lost both of his matches and has a current record of 5 and 7. Tyson Cole did not wrestle on Saturday and has a record of 7 and 3. The next event for the wrestlers is Thursday, January 11, at the Albion Dual.

The Lady Cardinals basketball team has been a little sluggish these past games. After a long Christmas break, they competed in the Stuart Holiday Tournament on December 28 and 29. For their first game they went up against Butte. After a tough defensive battle the Cards were defeated, 28-42. The next night they competed against Stuart. The team looked good and won by seven, 41-34. On Friday, January 5, the Cardinals went down to Elgin to play Pope John. They won; the score was 51 to 50. Then on Saturday, January 6, Keya Paha came into Cardinal territory. The Redbirds won the game.

The Junior Varsity Lady Cardinals also traveled to play Pope John on Friday, January 5. They had a tough time playing the Crusaders. They lost with a score of 24 to 39.
