Funeral services for Sister George Shoemaker, 90, O'Neill, were held Monday, August 2, 1999 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Reverend Mark Filips officiated. Music was provided by Sister Jeannine Hershiser and accompanied by pianist, Lisa Lueninghoener.
Burial was in the O'Neill Calvary Cemetery.
Sister George Shoemaker was born July 5, 1909 at O'Neill to Francis and Nellie (Joyce) Shoemaker. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1927 and entered the Franciscan Order at Stella Niagara in February of 1929 and professed her religious vows on August 30, 1931.
Her first teaching assignment was at the Mother House, then normal school and Sacred Heart Academy in buffalo, NY. In Charleston, Virginia she taught eighth grade and at St. Peter's School in Columbus, Ohio. Frrom1938 until 1940, she was at St. Mary's Academy in O'Neill and then on to Minot, South Dakota until 1942. She taught one semester at St. Frances Mission in South Dakota. Before returning to O'Neill in 1945, she received her bachelor's degree from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, IA.
Sister taught commercial classes at St. Mary's until 1960 and at St. Agnes Academy in Alliance. Then she returned to St. Mary's, becoming the grade school principal for five years. From there, she taught commercial classes at St. Mary's High School until she retired in 1988. She taught for 57 years
Sister George passed away Thursday morning, July 29, at the Marian Residence Nursing Home in Alliance.
