SMH Musical 1988

"You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown"

March 25, 26, 27, 1988

ãYouâre a Good Man, Charlie Brownä was featured at this yearâs fall musical. Based on the comic strip ãPeanutsä, the cast received much applause for their humorous rendition. Jack and Wally Roberts perfected the musical end of the production while Mrs. Milena helped compose dance sequences, and the stage crew worked hard building props behind the scenes. The production not only showed the talent of individuals but also the combined team effort that made the play so enjoyable.

Schulz is the only cartoonist to win the award twice. Colleges and organizations that have honored Schulz include Anderson College in Indiana, St. Maryâs College in Calif., Yale University, the National Education Society, and the Art Directors Club of New York. May 24 was proclaimed Charles Schulz Day in California by Govenor Ronald Regan. June 17 is ãPeanuts Dayä in San Diego.

Charlie Brown is everybodyâs little boy. Charlie Brownâs daily struggles often reflect our own daily struggles. He never gives up, he never stops trying tosurvive. Charlie Brown is Charles Schulz. The Comic strip is merely an abstraction of Schulz's own life. "Sparky" loves baseball, tennis, hockey, skating, and jogging and hates school! Schulz doesn't pretend to be an expert on Beethoven, psychiatry, or theology, but with the basic knowledge of these subjects, he can explore the childhood psyche. Children seem so innocent, but often times, they know more than they think they do. The way they communicate is usually straightforward and honest, but they can be very crurl in their honesty. The "Charlie Brown" characters are samples of the sophistication and lost innocence of the adult world. They also have their own, very real childhood problems that seem extremely serious to themselves, but probably not to their parents and other teachers. The children of "Peanuts" and children in general are simply younger adults and certainly very special and important human beings.
