The History of St. Valentines Day
by Justin Podany

Feburary 14th. When people hear this date they think of roses and candy. To some it is a romantic day, that they wish will not end. To others it may even be a day of hurt feelings and anguish. But do you know the history of this Hallmark holiday?

St. Valentines Day began as a pagan holiday, though it was not called that. It was not called that until Vantinius was martyred for marrying countless couples even though marriage was against Roman laws. His feast day became Feburary 14th and he is the patron saint of lovers In the years following his canonization Christians made St. Valentines day more a erotic than romantic holiday. Eventually it became what we know it today as a day of romanticism.
