Cards Football Ends Season After Tough
Schedule
by Pat Conway
As the state football playoffs start this week, the St. Mary's Cardinals find themselves sitting at home wondering what could have been. After an up and down season, the Cardinals ended up post-ing a strong, if not slightly disappointing, 3 and 5 record. The Cardinals posted wins against confer-ence foes; Niobrara, Verdigre, and Lynch. The fi-nal record hardly does justice to the hard work and effort the boys put in during practice and in the games. This year's team played a very hard sched-ule, playing five teams that were in the top ten in the state.
One of the highlights of the year was hold-ing area powerhouse Stuart to 12 points in a defen-sive struggle. At times, the Cardinals showed flashes of brilliance, with spectacular plays on both sides of the ball. These highlights, however were marred by continual lapses in focus, and turnover, and pen-alties negating many productive plays. The fan sup-port was, as always, phenomenal, with the crowds offering their support at all of the games. The Car-dinals look ready to refocus and train hard for next year.
