Niobrara Valley Conference Girls' Basketball Runner-Up Champions were: (front) Laura Cameron, Jordon Anderson, Carol Koenig, Lindsey Kallhoff, Kara Garman, Emily Walnofer, Christina Reynoldson, (back) Kristen Carr, Theresa Conradt, Michelle Shoemaker, Christine Troshynski, Liz Willis, and Jacque Earley.
The St. Mary's girls' basketball team started the season with a new coach, Tony Allen, new lineups, and new plays. The 2002-2003 varsity basketball team consisted of seniors Kristen Carr, Theresa Conradt, Lindsey Kallhoff, Michelle Shoemaker, Christine Troshynski; juniors Jordon Anderson, Laura Cameron, Gina Hoesing, Kara Garman, Emily Walnofer; sophomores Jacque Earley, Christina Reynoldson; and freshmen Carol Koenig and Liz Willis. Although the girls were off to a slow start with a 2-4 record going into the Stuart Holiday Tournament, they put up a fight with Butte and fell 43-50. Next the girls were at a 3-5 record, which wasn't the best, but the season wasn't even close to being over.
Three games later the SMH girls were at five hundred and were ready to show people who ran the show. Going into the Niobrara Valley Conference tournament on the West side with one game above five hundred and all odds against them, the girls dominated the West side tournament all the way to the championship at O'Neill where they lost to Elgin Pope John and took second place in the NVC finals. Still on a roll, the girls entered their D-2 subdistricts at Atkinson West Holt with a 12-9 record and defeated the Butte Wildcats in a well-fought game with a score of 54-42. In the second round of sub-district play, which happened to be the seniors' last game, SMH lost their battle with Stuart with a score of 54-38 and ended their season with a 13-10 record.
