St. Mary's and the O'Neill Public school have joined forces again for this year's wrestling season. The 2001-2002 season oficially started on Friday, November 16, with a potluck supper at St. Patrick's Parish Hall.
St. Mary's high school wrestlers include senior Aaron Troester, juniors Dan Ascheral and Tim Krugman, and sophomore Tyler Cole. Tyler Cole wrestled in the 119 pound bracker and came out on top tying for the first place medal. Dan Ascherl and Tim Krugman both finished with third place medals. Dan wrestled in the 130 pound group and finished with a 3-1 record for Saturday. Tim Krugman is wrestling in the 171 pound weight bracket. Tim also finished with a 3-1 record. Aaron Troester fought hard but didn't manage to come out with a medal. Aaron wrestled in the 140 pound weight bracket and finished the day with a 1-2 record. The wrestlers' next meet was at Newman Grove. Dan Ascherl wrestled three matches during the day and won all three; 6-1 on the season. Tyler Cole finished the day with a second place medal. His season record is 2-2. Then the wrestlers stayed home to host Burwell in a duel. Aaron Troester wrestled one match and won it. The boys traveled to Neilgh today.
Alex Ascherl is the only junior high wrestler. On November 8, Alex traveled to Plainview for his first match. Alex had one pin and one loss. The following week he then traveled to Creighton and had two losses. Alex had one win and two losses in Albion.
