Redbirds Return To Playoff Action
Seven seniors returned for the Cardinals in 1995. The fall of campaign brought forth the most experienced and talented team in nearly a decade. As the season began, all players eyes were upon a return trip to the Playoffs for the first time in eleven years. A summer football camp and a summer workout program created a strong building block for the Redbirds.
The Cards opened the season on the road in a clash with the Elgin Eagles. The Cards triumphed over the defending state runner-ups 0-12 to avenge last year's defeat. The year continued to prove successful for the Cardinals in their 1995 campaign. Stumbling blocks were present, however, as they dropped close games to Butte, North Loup-Scotia, and Spencer-Naper. The end result was a 5-3 record and State Playoff birth for the first time in eleven years.
Overton was the opponent for the Redbirds. Team confidence was strong, yet it did not overcome the size or Playoff experience that Overton threw at them. A strong offense kept the Cards in the game, but an overpowering defense surrendered seven touchdowns as the Cards ended the season 49-28.
The 1995 campaign brought forth many positive notes and brought forth many positive notes and brought respect back to the Redbirds, who will be a team to contend with in the future.
