Students Fight In Court
This year, another group of student lawyers and witnesses traveled to the courtroom to try their mock trail case. Deann and Kim Boettcher, Andy Willis, Frances Shefl, Andrea Flaherty, Stacey Mahony, Anne Heitz, Emily Reiser, and Lora Luther spent numerous Sunday nights going over case law and burden of proof with their coaches, Frosty Peetz and Mrs. Musson.
On October 6th, the St. Mary's team, as the plaintiff, didn't fulfill the burden of proof and lost to a polished O'Neill Public team. In the second trail on October 9th, St. Mary's was the defendant and Rock County was the plaintiff. After overcoming cases of pre-trail jitters, the team did well, and was awarded a narrow win in the case. However, Judge Cassel felt that Rock County's performance was better and allowed them to move on in competition.
Despite the two losses this year, the St. Mary's team learned a lot. They hope to come back next year with a more experienced team that is ready to win its cases.
