On Thursday, October 26, the St. Mary's Cardinals, led by Coach Dan Wolken, took on the Overton Eagles in Class D-1 Nebraska State High School Playoff action at Overton, Nebraska. Although the Cardinals, who were 5-3 on the year, were playing a tough 7-1 Overton team and appeared on smaller paper, the team's confidence was still riding high because it was their first playoff appearance in eleven years.

As the game started, the size advantage was clearly evident, but as the game progressed, the Cardinals found that they could throw over and outrun the bigger Overton team. It was a tough, well-fought game all the way through, but as the final score indicated, the Overton Eagles strategically out-maneuvered the Cardinals and rated a 49-28 victory, thus ending the Cardinal season.
