Prom Fun In Jeopardy

Band or D.J.? It's a heavy issue between the juniors and the seniors these days. Heavier than it should be. As some of you might already know, the junior class decided to get a D.J. instead of a live band this year for prom. And some of the seniors are not happy.

Why? I have yet to answer that question. I think some people need to see our point of view. First of all, we're not being cheap or selfish just because we don't want to spend $1600 on a band (not to mention the cost of good decorations). You spend money you have --you don't spend money you don't have. Period.

Second of all, it's the Junior-Senior Prom, not the Senior Prom -- sponsored by the juniors. When the juniors make all the decisions, they should be their decisions, not what they think the seniors would like.

Finally, let's look at what's really important here, people. Prom is what you make of it. If you actually believe Prom will be a dray only because of the fact that there is a D.J. instead of a band, then prom probably will be a drag --for you. But those who realize that it will be fun if they make it fun will have a blast and won't feel sorry for the people longing for something they don't have.

Prom. The word brings thoughts of fun to most people's minds. But what makes prom fun? Well, some would say the preparation, some would say the dinner, but almost anyone who has been to prom before would most certainly say...the band. Most seniors expect to have a band for prom because of the simple fact that Prom is FOR the seniors from the juniors. If you were having a dinner party, you wouldn't serve foods that none of your guests would like (even if you did like them), you would try to make them happy.

The one element that distinguishes Prom from every other dance during the year is that there is a band at Prom, not a D.J. A band can liven things up. They play the songs you like, but with their own twist. Prom-goers are able to sing solos on stage, dance on stage with the band, and in some instances, play an instrument with the band.

Bands are more expensive than D.J.s, and some people want to cut costs by getting a D.J. instead. Many students believe that the seniors deserve a band, since Prom is for them. It is not the Senior Prom, but it is done for the seniors. Selfish classes would rather have more money to use on a Senior trip. Also, the problem of the cost of decorations is raised. The seniors feel that good decorations are nice, but a band would be top priority. If decorations are too expensive, use toilet paper. Nobody cares.

Juniors shouldn't spend money they don't have; that's why they have approximately eight months to raise money to spend. Therefore, money should not be a deciding issue. A band sets an atmosphere that is certainly worth the extra money.

Prom is what you make of it. But it is a lot easier for people to make something of it when there is something to make something of.
