Chadron Scholastic Contest Tests Twenty-Four

Twenty four students and four sponsors took part in this year's Scholastic Contest in Chadron. Students involved were: Nicole Hurley, Emily Reiser, Stacey Mahony, Anne Heitz, Deanne Boettcher, Grace Bahrij, Andy Willis, Frances Shefl, Brian Chaney, Jeremy Zak, Adam Manoucheri, Brian Hoesing, Tony Guggenmos, David Pongratz, Lisa Weber, Tricia Fuhrer, Molly Bauer, Tim Gokie, Kevin Heitz, Nicole Reiser, Amy Willis, Kelli Givens, Mike Steele, and Jason Kruse. The sponsors were Mr. Wolken, Mr. Pardun, Mrs. Musson, and Mrs. Braun.

The students were released from their classes on April 7 at 11:15 for bag check and were on the road by 12:00 p.m., arriving in Chadron by 4:00 p.m. Everyone checked into their motel rooms, commonly referred to by the students as the "roach motel." Students then went to the College Campus and ventured and explored the campus. Some students took the advantage of using the volleyball and basketball courts and using the swimming facilities. All students and sponsors were treated to a delicious dinner at the Chuck Wagon Café, which was paid for by Mr. Gil Poese. A dance ended the evening, with St. Mary's students dominating the dance floor.

Friday arrived sooner than expected. Everyone ate breakfast at the college cafeteria then went to their various testing rooms, where they gave their best efforts. Frances Shefl placed first in Library Science and second in Trigonometry. Anne Heitz placed ninth in Beginning Typing. Andy Willis did very well placing second in Algebra.

An exhausted group returned Friday evening. It was a successful trip with a well-behaved group with little complaining considering the buggy motel with a bullet hole through the window.
