Joy Bahrij became the first female altar server in St. Patrick's Parish on October 6, 1994. Archbishop Elden Curtiss sent a letter authorizing all archdiocesan parishes to allow female servers. However, the decision of whether or not a parish will accept female servers is left to its pastor.
Father Richard Reiser, St. Patrick's pastor, has decided to allow female servers. He explains, "It's approved, and we're trying to implement what the diocese is recommending."
Now, female servers are high school students; however, there will soon be a training program for younger girls interested in serving, as there is now for boys.
The Archbishop's letter also states that female and male servers should be equal in all ways, even in their numbers at each mass.
