Cards Boast a Successful Season

The St. Mary's football team had its most successful season of the 90's. This year's team was a veteran group losing only three players from last year's squad. Led by six seniors, the cardinals went 5-4 in their first season in the Niobrara Valley Conference. The Card's five victories came against Wheeler Central, Wynot, Stuart, Lynch, and Spencer-Naper. Their losses were to Keya-Paha, Butte, Chambers, and the D-2 runner up, Elgin. The team was able to overcome adversities, such as, beating Lynch without either or their starting running backs and two of their starting linemen.

St. Mary's had four all-area performers: Tim Gokie, Dave Pongratz, Kevin Heitz, and Jeremy Zak. Kevin Heitz and Tim Gokie were honored as all-conference, and Tim also was an honorable mention for the all-state team.

With six returning offensive starters, and four returning defensive starters, the future looks bright for St. Mary's football.
