Advisories Might Solve Problem

A majority of the students are not hearing the daily announcements. I believe I have a solution to how every student can hear the announcements, everyday, and how every classroom can be cleaned, everyday. Can you remember back four years ago when both of these daily tasks were accomplished in a five-minute time period called an advisory? If you are a junior or senior, the answer is probably yes.

For those of you who don't remember, or you are not a junior or senior, an advisory was a home room that students went to at the end of each day. In your advisory, a teacher would read the daily announcements, while the students would clean up the room. Each advisory was composed of one teacher, and approximately ten students grades nine through twelve for the classrooms in the high school building, or about thirteen students composed of grades seven and eight in the grade school classrooms.

Advisories also planned pep rallies, fundraisers for the school, work committees for concessions, advisory pizza parties, Christmas parties, and any other activities they could dream up. Advisory also gave students time to recap the day's events and plan after school activities with other students.

The problem with our current way of receiving announcements is that many of the teachers do not bother reading the announcements, or if they do, many of the students do not listen to them. Reinstating advisories would make certain that everyone would have the opportunity to listen to the announcements, and advisories might liven up our dull schedules.
