Earth Day Required
On April 22nd, millions of
Americans across the country took part in celebrating the 23rd annual
Earth Day. Activities such as parades, recycling contests, and tree
planting projects were held in honor of this day. What many people do
not realize is that in order to help save our precious planet, we all
must put forth our best effort in making each day Earth Day.
Here in O'Neill this can be accomplished by taking
part in the local recycling program. Every second and fourth Saturday
of each month from 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., clean and prepared
recyclable can be dropped offat the county shed in O'Neill.
recyclable such as glass containers, plastic, milk jugs, aluminum
cans, cardboard, tin cans, and newspapers can be taken there to be
recycled.
Many of our priceless resources and energy can be
saved by recycling. If every American recycled their Sunday
newspaper, 500,000 trees could be saved. The energy saved by
recycling on aluminum can or glass bottle could operate a television
for three hours. Americans throw away enough aluminum every three
months to build our entire commercial air fleet and 2.5 million
bottles every hour. Just think about how many hours of TV you could
watch if all of those cans and bottles had been recycled. If the
pilgrims had aluminum cans, they would still be around today along
with environmentally hazardous plastic rings which hold a six pack
together.
The average American produces 3.5 pounds a year.
This figure could be greatly reduced if we all did our part in
recycling and making each day Earth Day
