SM Scholars Compete at Chadron
St. Mary's Students traveled about 250 miles to participate
in the Chadron State College Inter-High School Scholastic Contest for
the first time. Thirty-eight students, along with four faculty
members Miss Bode, Mrs. Braun, Mr. Wolken, and Mr.DuBois, left for
Chardon at 1:30 p.m. after a thorough bag check. With only one stop
along the way at Valentine, students and faculty arrived at Chadron.
After checking into the Super 8, students went their separate ways.
Some stayed at the motel, others played racquetball, and still others
ran around the track or played basketball. later that night, a dance
was held on campus. Despite the fun time everyone was having, all
students were asked back at the motel by 11:00 and lights out at
11:30. An early rise in the morning prepared everyone for a day full
of tests. Four different sessions of tests were scheduled throughout
the day. Activities were held for those not taking a test. Such
things as planetarium shows, viewing cadavers, and listening to an
outdoor band.
St. Mary's placed 12th out of seventeen class IV
schools. Six students ranked in the top 20% of their tests. These
were Don Dugan, 6th place in Business management, Monica Gallagher,
5th place in English Usage and 14 place in Vocabulary, Brian Hoesing,
8th place in General Science, Rick Pongratz, 6th place in Advanced
Math and 19th place in World Geography, Frances Shefl, 11th place in
Algebra II, and Mike Steele 7th place in Business management and
Decision making. Each student filled out an information sheet about
their test to prepare others for the test next year.
