2008 HCI All-Area Boys

The 2008 boys basketball season has come to an end for another year. This year St. Mary's, Ewing, and West Boyd made it to the state tourney. St. Mary's was the newcomer to the event and a surprise win over Ewing sent the Cards farther than any other team in school history.

All our area athletes should be commended for their accomplishments this year in providing an exciting season.

This year's team was selected through the votes of the area's 10 schools and media consultants. Each of the area coaches was able to nominate two players from his/her own team and three players from the other area school.

Named to the First Team are Zach Sibbel, St. Mary's; Brett Kaczor, Ewing; Austin Kaczor, Ewing; Cody Eiler, St. Mary's; and Michael Long of O'Neill Public.

Heading this year's team is junior Zach Sibbel. "Zach led the 21-5 Cards in scoring with 18.4 points per game and rebounding with 11.7 per game. Zach has the ability to play inside and out. Zach drew a lot of defensive attention at the state tourney. Zach had a huge game against Coleridge in the district championship with 33 points and 14 rebounds. He surpassed 1,000 career points during his final game this season," said Coach Gary Chvala.

Cody Eiler of St. Mary's takes fourth seat on this year's squad. "Cody was point guard for the fourth rated Cards. Cody is an excellent team leader with great quickness and jumping ability. Cody averaged 14 points and seven rebounds while handing out a school record 153 assists. Cody had a big game against Falls City Sacred Heart in the semi-finals with 21 points, seven assists and caught the eye of a lot of people in Lincoln," said Coach Chvala.
