SMH Lady Cards Win D-2 Sub-District

REBOUND - AshleyVandersnick goes up for a rebound in action against Spencer-Naper.

St. Mary's used two fourth quarter bursts to defeat Spencer-Naper and Cody-Kilgore, 53-44 and 53-52. Against Speneer-Naper on Tuesday night the Cards found themselves down 12-6 at the end of the first behind eight points by Candace Binder. The Cards settled down and started scoring the ball better in the second half narrowing the deficit to 19-18 by half behind six points by Ashley Vandersnick.

In the second half the Cards evened the score at 29-29 to start the fourth quarter with Liz Willis scoring eight points. In the fourth quarter the Lady Cards outscored the Lady Pirates 14-15. St. Mary's got seven from Willis and Vandersnick and eight points from Jacquie Stowell.

St. Mary's was led by Liz Willis with 19 points, 15 rebounds, five steals and two assists. Vandersnick added 13 points, eight rebounds and four blocks . Stowell added 11 points and Jenna.Connot had eight points to go with her 10 rebounds and four assists.

Spencer-Naper was led by Candace Binder with 21 points, 15 rebounds and four steals.

St. Mary's vs. Cody-Kilgore

On Saturday the Cards came out scoring quickly on their first two possessions of the game and stalled the rest of the first quarter finding themselves down 10-7 to Cody-Kilgore at the end of the first. St. Mary's tied the game at the half 21-21.

The Cowgirls scored eight unanswered points to take a 31-24 lead with three minutes left in the third quarter. St. Mary's answered, with a 6-0 run of their own to end the third quarter down 31-30. The fourth quarter saw the Cards explode again on, offense with 23 points. Liz Willis led the charge with 11 points and Jacquie Stowell and 7enna Connot each added five in the quarter. Cody-Kilgore was not to be outdone. Nicole Brandemuehl scored 13 in the fourth quarter as the Cowgirls scored 21 points in their fourth quarter.

St. Mary's took an eight point lead midway through the fourth, 48-40. Cody-Kilgore roared back with two free throws by Erin Dawson and three, three pointers iri a row by three different Cowgirls to trail only 52-51 with under a minute in the game. Brandemuehl was fouled with 52 seconds left and missed the first free throw but made the second to tie the game at 52 a piece. Liz Willis was fouled in the open court with half a minute left and made one of her two free throws to give St. Mary's the lead for good. Cody-Kilgore on their next possession missed a three pointer and the shot went out of bounds to the Cards. St: Mary's threw the inbounds down court where Anne Kersenbrock couldn't quite track the ball down and stay inbounds, leaving Cody-Kilgore one more chance with five seconds remaining. Cody-Kilgore got the ball down court and passed on an open three when the buzzer went off as the ball was being caught by Brandemuehl.

St. Mary's was led by Liz Willis with 24 points, seven rebounds, three steals and three assists. Jacquie Stowell also has 14 points and Anne Kersenbrock added eight points and had six assists.

The Cowgirls were led by Brandemuehl with 22 points followed by Danielle Robinson with 20 and Shyloe Schmidt with nine.
