St. Mary's Lady Cards defeated the Butte Wildcats on Tuesday, 54-31. St. Mary's started out with an 11-3 lead in the first and never looked back. St. Mary's lead 30-8 at the half and 46-11 at the end of three. Butte saw some life in the fourth outscoring the Cards 20-8. St. Mary's wore down the Wildcats with the full court press and man to man defense in the half court. Butte, which has only eight players, just didn't have enough gas in the tank.
St. Mary's was led by Jacquie Stowell with 16 points, Liz Willis, 11; and Jenna Connot, eight. St. Mary's post girls dominated the interior getting 12 rebounds from Liz Willis; nine from Ashley Vandersnick and eight from Jenna Connot. Liz Willis also had five steals and four assists.
Butte was led by Lisa Thiry with 11 points and Ashley Hostert added seven points, seven rebounds and six assists.
St. Mary's vs. Chambers
Friday night saw a different story with the Lady Cards losing to Chambers 56-42. A competitive game saw Chambers take a late run in the second quarter to make a 21-20 lead, 2921 going into the half. Chambers outscored the Cards 17-12 in the third and never let the Cards get any closer then 14 the rest of the game. "Chambers is relentless, if you go into a lull for even a minute or two you can be down double digits," said Coach Allen. Chambers shot over 43% from the field to the Cards over 38%. "We missed some cheapies during the second half and missed over half of our free throws. Those could have made the game a lot closer in the end, but that is what Chambers' intensity does, it makes you tired and go faster than you are used to," commented Coach Allen. Chambers was also able to turn the Cards over 27 times to only l 1 for the Coyotes.
On senior night for the Lady Cards, Liz Willis had nine points, seven rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks. Liz's seven rebounds ties her for the career record held by Christine Troshynski at 594 rebounds. Ann Kersenbrock added eight points, two rebounds and two assists. Carol Koeing attributed five points and four rebounds. "This senior class holds a special place in my heart. They were freshmen when I started coaching the girls and it has been a pleasure to watch them mature into fine young women and they have done a lot for our team, school and the St. Mary's community. They will definitely be missed next year on the court and off," commented Coach Allen.
A fine game was also put in by junior Jenna Connot who had 10 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. Ashley Vandersnick also added seven blocks to her total of 84 for the year, averaging 4.4 per game.
The Lady Coyotes were led by, Maryanne Dankert with 14 points, Alycia Libolt, 11; and Jacy Schwagey, with 10 points and eight rebounds: Kristi Waller also had a nice game with five assists and five steals.
