O'Neill Community Foundation Awards Scholarship

Tim Shoemaker, a senior at St. Mary's in O'Neill, was recently notified that he is a recipient of a $500 HTC - O'Neill Community Foundation scholarship. He was an alternate for the scholarship, but was later awarded it. .

"O'Neill Community Foundation is investing in individuals and in the community by awarding scholarships to young people who want to further their education and return home after college with their learned skills; benefiting and strengthening the future of our community," stated Nicole Sedlacek, HTC Coordinator.

Throughout high school Tim has been involved with many different activities. He has participated in football, basketball and track all four years of high school, lettering in each sport and has also participated in mock trial. Tim has also been involved with shooting sports for nine years and is an extraordinary minister of the Holy Eucharist at St. Patrick's Church. He also volunteers throughout the community for different people when they are in need of help.

Tim plans to attend Southeast Community College in Milford beginning in October, studying in the John Deere Ag Tech program that is offered there.

"For as long as I can remember, my brother has been a "greene" kid. John Deere green that is. I don't know if there is a toy tractor or gadget that he doesn't have!" said Tim's sister, Jennifer.

Tim lined up a job apprenticeship with Elkhorn Valley Implement to work during the afternoons each day and on some weekends, through a program that St. Mary's offers. Elkhorn Valley is his sponsor forthe John Deere Ag program.

After he completes the 18-month long program at SECC, he plans to return to O'Neill with a degree in diesel mechanics. He also hopes to possibly one day ranch around this area.

"In my opinion, and although it maybe biased because I am his sister, Tim is the kind of student that a community like O'Neill will want to return and keep the community flourishing," Jennifer shared.

Tim is the son of Hugh and Mardell Shoemaker of O'Neill.
