St. Mary's went into Ewing Thursday and won 44-34. Friday the Cards, won at home for the first time this year against Spencer-Naper 50-37.
On Thursday the Cards and Tigers played a very competitive game. The interior defense of both teams was dominating. St. Mary's jumped out 7-4 after one quarter but the Tigers came back in the second quarter with tough offensive rebounding and getting to the free throw line to take a 15-12 lead at the half.
In the third quarter St. Mary's outscored the Tigers 20-7 with better perimeter shooting. Carol Koenig came off the bench to hit two three pointers in the quarter and Jacquie, Stowell also hit one. St. Mary's then, hit 7-11 free throws in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory.
Ashley Vandersnick of the Lady Cards dominated the inside for the Cards on the defensive side with a school record 16 blocked shots, eight defensive rebounds and redirecting numerous other shots with one steal to throw in. St. Mary's interior offense was nonexistent with the height of the Lady Tigers so the St. Mary's perimeter game came to life with Anne Kersenbrock scoring 12 points, Carol Koenig eight points off the bench and Jacquie Stowell with 11 points. The Lady Cards were only able to get 13 points from their post players with seven of those coming from the line with Liz Willis scoring six.
The Lady Tigers were led by their two outstanding freshmen, Abbey Schueth with 10 points and 16 rebounds and Hayley Thramer with 13 points and nine rebounds.
St. Mary's vs. Spencer-Naper
On Friday the Lady Cards used a good first quarter to hold off the Lady Pirates. St. Mary's jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the first quarter and held on for a 28-19 lead at the half.
In the third quarter the Lady Pirates closed the gap to three, 33-30, until Jacquie Stowell hit a big three and the Lady Pirates never got any closer.
St. Mary's was led by their interior players after a tough game the night before. Liz Willis led the team with 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Jenna Connot had 10 points and Ashley Vandersnick followed up her superb game Thursday with eight points,10 rebounds and seven more blocked shots. S1oane Schneider did a nice job off the bench for the Cards with three assists, four points and three steals.
The Lady Pirates were led by Robin Holmberg with 13 points and seven rebounds. Candace Binder had 11 points and six rebounds in limited time with foul trouble.
