The St. Mary's Booster Club held their freshman/sophomore basketball tournament on Saturday, Jan. 14, The Pope John Crusaders won the girls division and the St. Mary's Cardinals were victorious in the boy's bracket.
On Saturday the freshmen-sophomore tournament hosted by the St. Mary's Boosters was won by the young Cardinals. In the first contest at 8 a.m. the Cardinals defeated the Stuart Broncos 50-27. The Cardinals placed four men in double figures led by Ross Crumly with 13,
Zach Sibbel and Nate Peterson each had 12 and Cody Eiler, 10. St. Mary's built a 28-6 halftime lead and never looked back.
In the championship contest the Cardinals defeated a good Elgin Pope John team 47-35. The Cardinals were able to build a 23-14 lead at half and maintain the lead throughout the second half. Cody Eiler led the Cards with 14 points and was followed closely by Zach Sibbel's 12 tallies. Ross Crumly added six points while Jake Reinan and Andrew Krotter each contributed five.
