Hurley Qualifies for U.S. Amateur
John Hurley recently qualified for the 105th U.S. Amateur championship, which will be held Aug. 22-28 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, PA. John qualified at Moccasin Creek Country Club in Aberdeen, SD, by shooting a 36-hole total of 1-under par 143.. He went into a one-hole playoff with Mark Anderson of Sioux Falls and won with a par. John found himself in third place after the first round with a 1-under par 73, but moved up with a 2-under par 70 in the final round.
The U.S. Amateur is the most prestigious championship for amateur golfers. Merion Golf Club has been the site of 17 previous U.S.G.A Championships. The most noteworthy of them being the 1930 U.S. Amateur in which Bobby Jones completed his famous Grand Slam.
At the Centennial Nebraska Amateur Championship played at Omaha Country Club on July 26-29, John Hurley finished in a tie for fifth place with John Sajevic of Fremont. One hundred forty-four golfers competed the first two days to hold one of the top forty-five spots to make the cut. John was tied for twenty-eighth after the first round but moved up to a tie for second after the second round by shooting the low round of the tournament, a 4-under-par 67. After finishing the four-day event, John shot rounds of 78-67-74-76 for a total of 295, just two shots out of the lead.
