Raymond P. Sullivan

Raymond P. Sullivan, age 76, of Elgin, passed away Sunday, April 17, 2005, at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Norfolk.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at St. Boniface Church in Elgin. Rev. Thomas Bauwens officiated the service.

Pallbearers were Matthew and Spencer Heying, Matthew Sullivan, Casey Wahlers, Peter and Graham Ives. Honorary pallbearers were Somer Lundborg, Alyss Heying, Makenzie Sullivan and Stephanie Sullivan,

Interment was in the St. Boniface Cemetery in Elgin with the Knights of Columbus Council 2411 and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus as Honor Guard and Military Rites conducted by the American Legion Post 229 and VFW Post 5816.

Huffman's Brooks Chapel of Elgin was in charge of arrangements.

Raymond was born May 10, 1928, in O'Neill, to Patrick and Anna (Barrett) Sullivan. He was baptized and confirmed in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in O'Neill and graduated from St. Mary's Academy with the class of 1946.

He worked for Extension Magazine and Sears Robuck before entering the Army March 8, 1951. He served in Korea during the Korean War with Company A, 38th Inf. 2nd Div. before receiving his honorable discharge Dec. 8, 1952.

On Oct. 24, 1953, at Hartington, Raymond married LeoraMeyer. The couple lived in Wayne and Norfolk where he worked for Wonderbread. In 1962 the couple moved to Elgin where they purchased Eddie's Superette grocery store. They operated the business as Ray's Superette until their retirement in 1993. Raymond was an avid pilot, and enjoyed taking his grandchildren up in the air. He was a member of the American Legion Post 229, VFW Post 5816, Knights of Columbus Council 2411, S't. Boniface Catholic Church and also the Elgin Chamber of Commerce all of Elgin. He was also a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus 1717 and the Experimental Aircraft Association. For a number of years he was a director of the Bank of Elgin.

Raymond is survived by his wife, Leora; sons, Tim and wife Karen of Harlan, Iowa, and Doug and wife Nancy of Boulder, CO; daughters, Beth and husband Pete Wahlers, and Mary Ives all of Denver, CO, and Teresa and husband Bob Heying of Petersburg; 16 grandchildren; brother, Eugene Sullivan of Sioux Falls, SD; cousin, Ed Hanley of O'Neill; sister, Nan McGill of Omaha; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Peg Jansen.
