The St. Mary's Cardinals advanced to the second
round of state football plaoff action and defeated an 8-1, Twin
Valley team.
The Cards struck first in the second quarter on a 48-yard pass from
Mike Simons to Matt Willis, followed by a two-point conversion by
Simons again to put the Cards up by eight. St. Mary's scored once
more before half on a 12-yard pass from Simon to Dan Haggerty. The
two-point conversion by Ryan Hickey gave the Cards a 16 point lead.
Twin Valley scored once in the second quarted on a 35-yard pass to
put them within eight points before going to half.
St. Mary's scored twice in the third
quarter. Matt Willis had a 36-yard touchdownand Mike Simons ran in a
score from the 1-yard line. Twin Valley scored only once more on a
16-yard run by Darrin Jolly, couple with an unsuccessful two-point
conversion, to leave the Rebels down 30-14, going in to the final
period of the day.
The Cards dominated the fourth quarter with 16 unanswered point. Ryan
Hickey scored on a 16-yard pass from Simons and Ryan Kelly gave St.
Mary's the PAT. The final touchdown of the gaem was a 3-yard pass
from Simons to Dan Haggerty. Simons hit Ryan Hickey for a two-point
conversion to put the Cards up by 32 points, ending the game, 46-14.
The Cards had 467 yard total offense with 318 of those on the ground
and 149 in the air. Top performers for St. Mary's were Jed Givens
with 137 yards rushiong.Ryan Hickey with 95 yards rushing, Matt
Willis had 90 yards receiving, and Kiel Nuemann led the defense with
22 tackles.
