The St. Mary's Cardinals finished their sixth game with yet
another decisive victory over their opponents. The Cards, in the past
few weeks, have been ranked in various polls hovering between first
and second place.
The Cards took first control of the ball at their own 24-yard line. Ryan Hickey took the first run to the 26. On second down, quarterback Mike Simons threw to Dan Haggerty for the first score of the night, putting the Cards up 6-0. Jed Givens ran in the two-point conversion to give St. Mary's an 8-0 lead with 11:16 left in the quarter.
The Tigers started their first drive of the game at their own 16-yard line, and, in two plays, Joe Wagner took Ewing to the 20. On third down, the Cards were assessed a 15-yard penalty to give Ewing the first down on the 35. Ewing's quarterback, Blake Bolwitt tired to hit receivers Nate Funk and Jared Kruntorad, but were unsuccessful and Ewing was forced to punt form their own 35-yard line.
St. Mary's Jed Givens received the punt and ran out to the 38-yard line where the ball was fumbled and Ewing recovered. The Tigers next possession by Wagner saw a loss to the 31, and on second down Ewing fumbled, giving the Cards excellent field position at the 31-yard line.
The Cards, in control again, took the ball down to the 11-yard line where Simons hit receiver Nick Welding. On second down, from the 11, Jed Givens ran in his second touchdown and the two point catch by Haggerty put the cards up 16-0 with 6:29 left in the quarter.
Ewing started their third possession at the 15. The Tigers went to the air, trying to find Jared Kruntorad or Bryan Steskal but the St. Mary's secondary forced a punt on the series. The Cards took over on the 30. Jed Givens moved the ball out to the 37 and on second down, Ryan Hickey fumbled the ball and the Tigers took over on the 39. Ewing started out on the 39, but the Card defense brought the Tigers back to the 19, where Ewing was forced to punt.
The Cards started out their fifth drive form the 33 but the Tiger defense set Simons back for a loss to the 24. A screen pass on the next play to Givens set the Cards back up to the 30 where St. Mary's punted. The Tigers took over on their own 30.
The Tigers made little ground on the next drive, going out t the 35 but the Card defense again held their opponents to four plays and a total 2-yard gain.
St. Mary's started the series on the 38-yard line but a penalty took the line of scrimmage back to the 28. Mike Simons hit Haggerty at the 24 and Ryan Hickey took the ball down to the 15 where Simons threw to Nick Welding at the 10. Simons took honors on the next touchdown when he ran in the score to put St. Mary's up 22-0.
The Ewing offense was stopped dead in their tracks on the next series when the Cardinals' secondary kept Ewing from completing any passes. The Tigers punted off to the 37-yard line.
Ryan Hickey marched up the field with the ball on the next three plays to the Tiger 12-yard line. On first and ten from the 12, the Cards fumbled and turned possession back overt to the Tigers on the 13. Two plays later, Mike Simons intercepted a pass form Bolwitt and ran the interception down to the 1. Simons then ran the touchdown in to put St. Mary's up 30-0.
St. Mary's scored twice more, once on a 7-yard run from Hickey for a touchdown with a failed point after attempt and later when Mike Simons scored to finish the half at 44-0.
The Tigers tried two more attempts but he Cardinal defense shut them out, not letting them put any points on the board.
The cardinals scored once more when Mike Simons hit Matt Willis on a 12-yeard pass putting the Cards ahead 50-0. The game then ended due to the 45-point rule.
The Ewing Tigers had 24 yards total offense with a negative 7 yards rushing and 31 passing. The Tigers had two fumbles, one for a loss, and three interceptions.
The Cards had 328 yards total offence with 210 rushing and 118 passing. The Cards fumbled the ball five times and turned three of them over to Ewing.
Mike Simons had 12 carries for 32 yards, Ryan Hickey carried 10 times for 92 yards, Dan Haggerty had five catches for 88 yards, Jed Givens carried five for 50 yards. Kiel Neumann took top honors on defense with 12 tackles.
The Card will play the Lynch Eagles this Thursday at Lynch with a 7:30 pm kickoff.
